Look Who’s Talking Now

Jon Heyman of SI.com had the following to say in a post to his Daily Scoop.

The Mets’ minor-league system looks a lot better now than most realized last year, when so-called experts rated it near the bottom. Those ratings will need to be re-evaluated now that five young Mets looked very good or better this spring. Left-hander Jon Niese will be the fifth starter (one scout said, “He won’t be No. 5 for long.”), shortstop Ruben Tejada will start the year with the Mets and supremely-talented right-hander Jenrry Mejia may make it as a reliever. GM Omar Minaya was determined not to take Mejia to start the spring, but the momentum seems to be swinging the other way. Plus, Fernando Martinez re-established his value as a bright young outfield prospect and first baseman Ike Davis looked terrific, especially at bat. It’s too late to give ex-Mets exec Tony Bernazard his job back, but if removing his shirt and being impolite once or twice were his only faults, firing him seems like a bad call now.

Ironically, it was Jon Heyman who kept reminding us that we didn’t have the chips for a Roy Halladay deal and made countless jokes at the Mets expense this offseason.

Still, it’s nice to see Heyman come around.

  • Heyman’s “come around” because the prospects have looked surprisingly good. So really, it’s nice to see some prospects looking good! And I’d add Chris Carter to that mix.

    • “because the prospects have looked surprisingly good.”

What’s surprising about it? Everyone who has followed the Mets system has known how good these guys are and them Mets have a few others that are expected to be at that level shortly, like Resse Havens and Brad Holt.

    • Heyman’s a joke!! We could make the same observations he does about the minors if we scan their box scores every day! he brings nothing to the table.. he’s as clueless as the other “expert” on WFAN, MIke Francesa!

  • Wow, wow, and wow all over again, for it sure looks like it has turned around now. And because it happened in this short period of time, it sure looks like he must have had something to do about it.

Oh well, you lose some, and then gain some, but life just seems to go on.

But either way, will the team really have a pitching staff this year, or what???

  • Heyman is a hack. The fact that he is typically wrong or moronic in his comments removes any credit for the occasional correct call he makes. Even this report about the Mets young players, a group he routinely gave little respect, takes a cheap shot at the Mets about firing Bernazard. Maybe young players play better when they can relax and focus on baseball and Wogan brought that sense of calm to the organization. If you constantly scream and threaten people they don’t perform as well, shocking. Heyman couldn’t make a comment about the Mets without a backhand to the face. He is a lousy reporter and looks like a joke on the MLB Network when compared to Verduci. If Heyman & Rosenthal moved on to cover a team more in line with their skills they would be in Kansas City and we wouldn’t have to listen to their dumb comments anymore. Otherwise they’re OK.

  • Show it to me in the major league level.. tampa bay prove u can win with prospects coz they develop and became good, u never know until they come to the big leagues and produce.. until then the jury still open on this guys and all “prospects” in baseball..

    • I agree 100%, prospects mean Jack & Shit to me (and P.S. Jack left town). Ever once in a blue moon, a prospects works his way through the system and actually contributes on the MLB level (Wright, Reyes, are the exceptions).

I typically view prospects as trade fodder, and having a highly rated farm system means your due for a sweet trade. As I have said a number of times, trade the farm for Alex Gonzalez because he has proven he can succeed in the majors, where the prospects have not.

      • You’re all wrong, because the success of a team coms from the development of its youth.

  • Whats annoying is that if the crop of young players start to play poorly in the minors, Heyman and others who are now re-evaluating them will make another 180 and say the farm was bad all along. Lets just let the young guys play it out and see what happens.

  • The vast majority of position players have their best years between 25 and 30. The cost of paying and keeping players over their first 6 years is well below what it is after they have 6 or more years in the Majors which allows a team to add cream of the crop players at other positions of need especially in the area of starting pitching which is always a need. Why wouldn’t you want to get the best production at the lowest cost by developing your own position players? If it is a problem with having those prospects pan out then the answer is to develop more of them and keep the best ones. Use the others for bench depth, emergency callups, or trades. It is this lack of ever having any other options that makes us settle for a less than ideal player in the free agent market rather than being able to wait a year or two for a real difference maker. That’s why we have been trying to trade Castillo since virtually the moment we signed him.

  • [...] Look Who’s Talking Now (metsmerizedonline.com) [...]

  • Yeah, We have some young prospects as does every team. Some will make it some won’t. How many more prospects would we have if we hadn’t signed so many free agents or if we had allowed three of our own (Castillo, Wagner and Perez) to leave after having offered arbitration. By my count we would have had 9 more picks in the first and supplemental rounds. 11 if we had declined Delgado’s option and offered arbitration and he signed elsewhere. What would this teams future look like with 11 more highly desired prospects everywhere from rookie league on up to AAA. Other than Beltran for baseball reasons and Pedro for baseball and other reasons none of these free agents were worth mortgaging the future for from Alou – K-Rod including Wagner, Castillo, Perez, the only way the Mets have addressed any needs is by signing over the hill guys to expensive and long term contracts that they didn’t live up to either by injury, poor play or both. Beltran has been the only free agent that was worth it but he is a 5 tool superstar at a key defensive position who came to the market IN HIS PRIME and even he has been off the field with injuries. The best free agent moves the Mets have ever made was by losing free agents namely Mike Hampton which got us Aaron Heilman and David Wright and Tom Glavine who got us Bradley Holt and Ike Davis. With 11 (at least) high draft choices tossed away you have to believe there were at least 6 future Major Leaguers and a couple of All Stars in there somewhere.

    • Agee

to follow up on ur point it still puzzle me that not only we lost draft picks for alou in 2007, but we lost them again in 2008 after our stupid ass gm gave him a contract again!!!!!castillo, and perez,,, what exactly does minaya see that 31 other gmls dont see??
Krod was necessary, but I didn’t get wagner not given arbitration.. either way, what’s done is done and we’re stuck with this stupid as* gm for 3 more years!! That is of course assuming this team makes the playoffs, if not then we’ll be stuck with him for 3 more months..

      • Alex, I really think at this point it’s not really Omar. Yeah Omar is the guy who goes out and gets these guys but I firmly believe it is an organizational philosophy and the one’s implementing that philosophy have no contract. This piecemeal win now approach starts at the top and that’s not going away.

  • And not even that fully explains how not keeping our picks hurts our ability to win in the future. The supplemental pick the Phillies got for losing Wagner to us was a part of how they got Cliff Lee. The #1 pick they got from us for signing Wagner (Kyle Drabek) was a big part of how they got Halliday and really how good would Drabek, a highly thought of successful AA starting pitcher look in our farm system today? Add to that trading a promising young 2nd basemen to Cleveland and a promising young outfielder to Seattle (along w/Endy and Smith) for another guy who got hurt and it all adds up to more competition against us and less competition in our farm system which in turn leads to more need for the long term expensive injury prone free agent which in turn leads to less Major League production and losing even more high draft picks.

  • Heyman is only displaying his own ignorance. These players having been coming along and there is nothing new that we now see some of them coming to the top and possibly becoming ready to play in the big show. His Bernazard comment just clinches his ignorance. The last thing we want is that moron back.

  • Heyman is clueless, he’s never had an original idea. Everything that comes out of his mouth or pen he read somewhere else. He spends have his time trying to impress FransFatso
