Jenrry Mejia Passes Latest Test, Looks Like He’s In

Yesterday was a big day for 20-year old RHP Jenrry Mejia as he continues to move closer toward locking up a spot in the 2010 Mets bullpen.

He passed his test of working on back-to-back days with flying colors. The young phenom pitched a perfect inning of relief in the Mets’ 7-6 exhibition victory over the Braves, one day after pitching 1 1/3 shutout innings against the Nationals.

During the Braves game yesterday, Jerry Manuel spoke to SNY’s Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez and had this to say,

“I think if we feel like he’s throwing strikes and has some command of the strike zone, with the stuff that he has, he can be a very big part of the bullpen.  But, that being said, going forward, we have to project that, possibly, he can be an eighth-inning guy at some point, but we wouldn’t start out in that fashion.  We would start out trying to get him confidence and some success and go from there.  But, he has a tremendous, tremendous arm, and what he has done so far is dominate hitters, but it’s spring training and we have to be careful with that as well.” (via MetsBlog)

Although Mejia would not automatically start out as the setup man initially, it’s clear that Manuel sees him as key piece to his bullpen, though he does add that he realizes the spring performance may not be mean a smooth transition to the major leagues. Probably a lesson he learned last spring when Bobby Parnell made the team out of camp only to struggle in the majors. That said, what started out as irrational exuberance when Manuel suggested Mejia as the setup man at the start of spring training, now seems to be a foregone conclusion.

In seven games, Mejia has tossed 11 2/3 innings and allowed seven hits, two runs, two walks, nine strikeouts. He has a  1.54 ERA.

Omar Minaya still insisted to reporters yesterday, that he is taking a more cautious approach and that a decision on the young right-hander will not be made until the conclusion of training camp next week.

Although I’ve strongly opposed a move to the bullpen for most of the spring, I am warming up to the idea. Still, it leaves a couple of unanswered questions.

1. In my master plan, Mejia would have logged precious innings at AAA and been our insurance plan if someone faltered in the rotation. I saw him as the mid-season replacement for one of Perez, Pelfrey and Maine. I don’t expect all three of them to suddenly assert themselves and win 15 games each. From what I’ve seen of them this spring, they’ve sure looked disappointing when you consider they had more to prove this spring than any other pitchers in camp. So assuming Jon Niese gets the fifth starters job, who becomes our ace in the hole when we’ll need to call upon the minors for a replacement starter?

2. What if Jenrry Mejia succeeds in the bullpen and becomes a lethal weapon for us? What happens next season? Does he end up remaining a great reliever which is nowhere near as valuable as a great starting pitcher?

  • What seems to be forgotten in the “Should Henrry Mejia be on the roster” debate is the fact the success for a pitcher has to go beyond 1 month. Mets fans have seen many pitchers who pitched well once or twice, but then got shelled after the opposite team figures out their tendencies. It could be true that pitchers in this category, such as Jorge Sosa and Bobby Parnell, do not have as good of stuff as Jenrry, but the odds are against Mejia continuing to “dominate,” especially when he comes out of “the zone.”

Overall, I think the Mets should send him down to hone his skills as a starter not roll the dice for having him be an “8th inning set-up guy.”

  • I just don’t understand why if he has this great arm, they don’t talk about him being the ace of our rotation in the future. I would send him to AA, then if he dominates there, AAA. Let him work on being a starting pitcher. If, in the event he doesn’t seem able to go deep into games, then convert him to the bullpen. It is a lot harder to find a top of the rotation starter then it is to find an 8th inning pitcher.

  • I’ll say one thing, let’s hope for the best for jenrry if he does come up with the team, but I’ll tell u one thing, if he comes up, and he struggles and this kid has issues afterwards, then blame omar minaya, how stupid can he be?? Why rush him now? The answer is coz our stupid ass gm try to sign a guy that hadn’t pitched for a year and a half to be the set up man, once again try to outsmart himself he gave us the “low risk high reward” crappy speech he’s used to, by making the fans think escobar was a great signing, once again, our genious gm fail to make an upgrade where is needed and now we’re playing with fire.. honestly, as muuch as I like mejia he hasn’t faced mlb ready hitters, let him develop a lil longer in the minors just as davis is… we shouldn’t even be talking about this had our stupid ass gm signed a set up pitcher, or trade for one who doesn’t have his shoulder in pieces..

    • I need to breath, and relax, and remind myself that despite the 150$ million we shell out we have the 5th worst gm in the game.. and that’s why desicions like this ocurred.. jesus h christ..
The only reason I want this gm fire is due to his inavility to recognize the problem before it happens, usually he needs a whole year to figuere out..
      Let’s. Go. Mets.

  • This is a bad move, even IF Mejia works out well as a reliever, because he’s our best starting pitching prospect among the likes of Holt, Allen, Familia, Niesen, Urbina, et cetera (not counting Niese, since he looks like he’s made the rotation). Unless its Holt or Gee, waiting in the wings, who would provide rotational depth for us during the season? i suppose Nieve might, but he couldn’t do 100 IP+. This is a bad move.

  • I want this guy to be a starter. Look at our future, this organization doesn’t have much in terms of a starter. I know guys like Santana actually started out as a reliever, but I really don’t think it is a great idea to start Mejia out as one. Further, he didn’t have a good AA stint and was awful in that winter league he was in. To suddenly jump into majors like that, to me, is quite dangerous.

I would rather have him start in AA. If he dominates that, promote him to AAA. If he dominates that, we got someone special for 2011. When all we hear is how special this guy is and how he is a #1/#2 starter material, I think making him an 8th-inning guy is just not a good idea.

But as I said, Santana started out as a reliever (and not even a great one) so what do I know…

    • Very true. The game is smarter than all of us–even the great Francesa.

  • For the first time I believe Jerry manuel should go.

Why is this guys talent being wasted as a early inning reliever?
Mejia is a stud and as usual the Mets will castrated a stud.

  • Once again Jerry Manuel has proved he’s unfit for the position he holds. That quote was awful. He said “if WE FEEL he’s throwing strikes”. How about some objectivity instead of all subjectivity. Is he throwing strikes or not? Forget about what you feel Jerry, what is the pitcher actually doing? Then “and has SOME command of the strike zone”. SOME command is not good enough in the majors; just look at Ollie. What good is Ollie with SOME command? “Going forward, we can project that POSSIBLY”. Once again, is POSSIBLY good enough in the majors. How about knowing for sure that he is ready? “We would start out trying to get him confidence and some success and go from there”. Does he have confidence NOW? If not, why experiment, instead send him where he can develop that confidence without the pressure of being in the majors? “but it’s spring training and we have to be careful with that as well.” That’s the only thing that he has said that makes sense. Yes, be careful and that means send him to AAA to add the finesse and skills he need to be successful in the majors in the future. Jerry just doesn’t learn. He is going down the same path as he did with Parnell. How long will the Mets allow Jerry Manuel to be the personal wrecking ball of every future career coming up from the farm system? Mejia needs to be in AAA to fill out his skills to position himself for a future position in the rotation, not as a two bit reliever now.
