Mets Current Roster As Good As It Gets… Until???
The current Mets roster continues to morph into whatever vision Omar Minaya, his underlings and ownership have for the team. We can all question the moves or lack thereof, but for the time being with the exception of a few smaller moves, the Met roster seems pretty set.
The Met payroll will be far lower this year. We can all argue about why, the Madoff fallout, anticipated lower attendance, dearth of quality talent in free agency, the fact is it is lower, way lower. If you look over at Cots Baseball Contracts the estimated Met payroll for 2009 stood at $149,373,987. The estimated 2010 commitment for the Mets is around $122-127 million (this based off who will make the team and who won’t.) That’s $22-27 million dollars difference in the black Met fans.
In my estimation, this leaves open the possibility of some quality acquisitions for this team in mid-season. I, personally, believe this has been the ‘Plan’ spoken of when the Mets hierarchy developed their plan for the offseason. Go after Bay, and get a starter, but only at their price. They would not overpay for mediocre talent that they felt was no better than what they already had. So, they valued players at what they valued them at, and, would not go over the dollar amount they assigned to each free agent. The pitching they sought wasn’t available at their price, so they went with what they have…
The Met farm system is now rated “middle of the pack” by some. This is a wonderful improvement over previous years, when it was rated near the bottom of all the minor leagues systems. It seems their international signings have supplemented some weak draft classes. The Mets will more than likely have some ‘chips’ to deal at the deadline. There will most certainly be dollars available for deals to be made.
When examining that possibility, we can all identify certain guys. I always look at perceived weaknesses on our team such as first base, second base, starting and relief pitching. The question being, what players will be available at the deadline? This is hard to ascertain because we don’t know who’ll get hurt, who won’t sign a contract extension, who will be a contender/non contender. I, myself, feel the Mets have identified certain players, let other GM’s know they are interested in those players if they are moved and to contact them should their situations change, and/or their demands are lowered.
The Mets may be able to hold teams over a barrel this summer because they will have available dollars to take on contracts. The only other team who may have that flexibility is the Yankees. So, for all of us screaming about why the Mets did not just pay Joel Pineiro or Jason Marquis or sign Ben Sheets, remember that the 2010 season is long. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Something bigger and better may be on the horizon. Spring is hope. Let’s just hope this is truly the situation. If it is not the situation and the Mets are close and don’t make a sensible deal for decent help at the deadline or before, Met nation will revolt. Are you listening Mr. Wilpon, Omar, et al?
It’s my belief that the only deals the Mets will make in season or during the spring will be for pitching. I don’t think Omar will trade quality prospects for a bat. The Met farm system is “on the come”. Rejoice Met nation! Dollars are available for in season acquisitions. Rejoice Met Nation! Spring games start on Monday. Rejoice Met nation! Jenrry Mejia actually throws 97. It’s not hype. Rejoice Met nation!

Keep in mind last year’s payroll was closer to 139M than 149M. Cots had some interesting stuff going on, if you click on 2009 it shows the total after subtracting Sheff but before a few minor players being $139,602,235. This year Cotts will most likely say 135Mish with GMJR’s cash added in. So we will most likely be around 12-16M less but not 25M.
BTW – after meeting with Fred, Omar and Jerry last week…
Fred and Jerry reads nothing…
Omar reads EVERYTHING…
Mack
The real since 1986!!!?? The teacher??? No freaking way!!!!

Mike, finally someone said exactly what I’ve been thinking. Couldn’t have said it better, myself. Thanks.
Actually, in my opinion, that scenerio only comes to fruition if the fans finally come to realize the enemy isn’t Omar, he’s the sheild the true enemy hides behind, JEFF W. I’d be comforted if I thought for certain money was withheld this offseason with an rye for midseason & riches of next F/A class. Unfortunatly, I believe the restraint was meant for & directed at causing a “FIRE OMAR” fan uprising Fred couldn’t ignore. going all the way back to the end iof ’07 Jeff was adament in wanting “HEADS TO ROLL” he identified his targets as both Omar & Willie, Omar is protected by Fred because he’s Daddy’s controlling leash over his son’s impulsivity & meddling. Jeff craves power & adulation. He is green envious over Hal & Hank’s positions. His brother is autonomous in Sterling Japan, those he views as peers H&H Steinbrenner boys are autonomous in Bronx. Jeff either desires no GM or one he can control like Duquette(KAZMIR TRADE. MATSUI SIGNING). Fred protected Omar by giving him that 3y extension over Jeff’s objections. Jeff has tried everything he can to create dissatisfaction within Metfandom, including presiding over an SNY media blitz to sew discontent with FO. Unless the fans create so much pressure on Fred to fire Omar, Omar’s safe & keeping Jeff controlled. I’m convinced the only reason Willie got to mng in ’08 was Omar’s intercession on his behalf against Jeff in front of Fred. Omar was winning the tug of war up to Willie’s throwing Wilpon name in mud over rediculous racial bias complaint, wonder if Willie had considered the Rotunda & Museum before scapegoating in such a flimsy way. It sealed his fate with Papa Wilpon, giving Jeff what he desired; but not without Omar’s pound of flesh getting Jeff’s pitching controller(GM/guru) canned alongside Willie. Jeff’s final revenge was forcing Omar to make 2 bicoastal roundtrip flights BACK-2-BACK TO GET IT DONE!
If we want to free the money & ability to add in midseason, we, the fans, musty make it apparent to Jeff, he can’t hide behind Omar & we see what he’s doing. Petitioning for a change in COO or the reassignment of GM reporting to President instead may panic Lil Jeffie through expoasure.LET’S GO METS!!! FREE OMAR!!! WS OR BUST!!!
Wow, from 150 wasted million dollar to around maybe 135 or so.. although they won’t say it publically that maddoff fiasco affected the wilpons since last year, either way as I’ve said before, they could’ve and should’ve made some moves that weren’t gonna cost much and help the team (lopez 1.75 million) to at least improve in certain areas. Either way if we’re in contention by july I’m sure they’ll be a salary dump from a team trying to cut back and some pitchers might become available for trade w/o us giving up too much (oswalt, meche, zambrano etc)
Mike Lloyd, are you this guy: Mack’s Mets?
http://macksmets.blogspot.com/2010/02/mid-season-trade-mike-cameron-koreans.html
If not, one of you plagiarized from the other; verbatim.
Nobody plagiarized nobody. It looks like Mike wrote this piece and Mack’s Mets posted part of it and linked back to this site. I used to do the same thing on my Mets blog, when I used to have one, and Matt Cerrone made a career out of doing this and still does. The only problem I see though is that Mack, doesn’t mention the sites he gathers excerpts from by name but he does link back.
wierd…thats all I got to say about that site.
Nope, but that’s my writing there. But I don’t read ‘Mack’s Mets’ so I don’t know where that came from.
Mike, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but did you forget what Omar did at the ASB last year? Nothing! With the team 1 1/2 games out of wild card he did nothing. We could of had Halladay or Lee.
Really – tell me who could have been traded worthy of Lee or Halliday and obviously Lee bolted from Filthy, do you think he would have stayed or just been a rent a player for a Double AA team since the regular team was on the DL.
The team was a mash unit and it was not worth unloading anyone to finish 3rd instead of 4th.
Im ready, lets go get wats ourz. A champianship in Queenz…
