Fernando Martinez Named MVP Of Caribbean Series

ESPN’s Enrique Rojas reported via Twitter that Mets prospect Fernando Martinez was named the MVP of the Caribbean Series last night.

Martinez went 2-4 with a walk and an RBI to lead the Dominican Republic to a 7-4 victory over Venezuela. Overall, Martinez had a great series, batting .348 (8-for-23) with a double and two home runs.

It looks like F-Mart is in prime mid-season form, and it would be great to see him carry this over and have a great spring training. While Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr. are virtual locks to make the team, there is one spot left open at least until Carlos Beltran returns from injury, and the kid could force the Mets hands with a solid spring.

As I wrote here a couple of weeks ago, I still believe we have a future All Star with tremendous power potential in F-Mart. If he could just stay healthy and string together a few hundred at-bats in AAA, we may see him sooner than you think, and I predict that his second cup of coffee in the Majors will be much better than the first.

  • Again, I wrote this a few weeks ago, but what if F-Mart comes to spring training, lights it up, while Pagan and Matthews struggle? Do you give him the starting CF job until Beltran comes back? I don’t see how you couldn’t. I know that Pagan and Matthews would still be on the team, but if the Mets want to have a chance this year to compete, they have to go with the hot bat. Of course, he could come to spring training and bat .100.

    • ……..and then what?? Beltran comes back and you send him back to AAA. That is not how you develop a kid with his kind of talent. If he is going to come up he has to play everyday and have a starting position on the field. They already made that mistake with him last year when they called him up and had him sitting on the bench for days at a time. Another full year of AAA will do this kid a world of good. No need to rush him at this point in his young career.

    • Mykey, a little perspective the year prior to our benching him almoat permanently Anderson Hernandez had a similar Carribean series!
      I still believe it’s Pagan’s b/u job to lose.

      • Martinez will start in the minors, they will take a long look at Pagan in CF with the big club and martinez in CF in the minors to see if one of them could be a long term CF replacement, part of me thinks beltran if he comes healthy in JUne, will be traded next off-season with next year his walk year, i don’t see mets letting beltran playing his walk year with them and letting him walk for nothing.

  • Wouldn’t a top of the rotation starter been more usefull than Fernando Martinez sitting in the minors where he will no doubt find his way back to the disabled list in 2010? Couldnt we have used F-Mart to get bronson Arroyo from the Reds who would have instantly transformed this team into a contender? It’ll be another 3-4 years before we see anything substantial from F-Mart. And even if we need another ootfielder down the road, they are a dime a dozen as compared to a top of the rotation starter.

    • Why would the Reds trade their top starter for a guy who has not had more than 350 at-bats in any season since he became a pro at age 16? If you’re going to make a stupid suggestion like trading F-Mart, the least you could do is propose a realistic trade.

      • Bronson Arroyo is a 33 year old pitcher who is above average. If we offered Fernando Martinez, one of the top prospects in baseball, for him straight up, they’d probably pay Arroyo’s whole contract. It would be a terrible trade for us, not the Reds.

        • And above average may even be pushing it

    • I agree and we should try and get 2B Phillips for F-Mart, Tejada(ss), john maine and a pitching prospect.

      • I meant WITH Arroyo.

  • IMO, FMart needs another year in AAA to build upon his performance. He does not need the pressure of trying to deliver results at Citi at this time. Leave him be and let him develop for the future. The 2010 season is pretty hopeless for the Mets anyway.

  • Fernando Martinez was named the MVP of the Caribbean Series but his combined winter stats were just O.K.

    His combined stats show a .243 BA (70AB, 20 hits, two 2B, two HR). He had 13 K’s and 4 BB’s.

As with Ike Davis, the question is:
Will the player perform consistently at the major league level and is it in his best interests to be in the big time right now?

    • You’re leaving out his Dominican Championship stats which were exellent.

        • Des, interesting; but nor germane since he’s at best a AAA OPTION MAKING bUFFALO FANS HAPPIER OR A mlb B/U WASTING ON PINE. Everyone’s acknowledged he had a mediocre Winterball season; but came alive during the series. While we scoff at it as glorified play time, there is, I understand, pressure to perform, under which, he certainly achieved something. I believe it was only a couple of years ago that Anderson Hernandez was selected his winterball leagues MVP for production throughout the entire short season. The accompanying trophies likely have prominent places on their shelves/mantles.

        • You’re still leaving out the Domincan Championship 9 Game Series in which he hit 2 homers and much improved after rehabbing in the Dominican League. I’m not sure where their posted but you can try mlb.com and click Winter League Statistics. Though, for some reason they did not post the Domincan Championship stats last year either as I was following his numbers then, which were excellent.

  • Well, the point that everybody keeps missing is the fact that we are talking METS PROSPECTS!! Not just bench players or utility, or even over the hill players, but actual prospects (FMart, Ike Davis, Daniel Murphy). That represents a big change from past seasons where these young guys would have been traded already for some washed up veteran. I like the fact that the Mets are finally getting it and actually developing and using their talent. We have Daniel Murphy, Jonathon Niese, Bobby Parnell, and Fernando Nieve ready to make significant contributions to the major league ballclub this year. We also have Wilmer Flores, Kirk Niewenheus, Jenry Mejia,Reese Havens, and of course FMart coming up. don’t gt me wrong, I am not suggesting that we have a great farm sytem, but we do have some pretty good prospects in the minors; and that can only be good; because the Mets have been trying to build their team through free agency for years, and that approach had led us to just ONE World Series appearance (2000) over the last 23 years since that memorable 86 team (which by the way, was filled with homegrown talent that made very significant contributions: Dwight Gooden,
Darryl Strawberry, Len Dykstra, Ron Darling, Wally Backman, Kevin Mitchell, Howard Johnson, Mookie Wilson,Roger McDowell, Sid Fernandez, Rick Aguilera and Randy Myers. Of Course, if Minaya turns around and starts trading these young players (like he has done before) , all of this would be moot; but you can only hope.

    • straw, etc, a little historical accuracy would be nice, your listings of home growns is currently & historically inaccurate: Current inaccuracies not NY homegrowns; but elsewhere developed:
Nieve was an Astros product we p/u off waivers last season. Historical inaccuracies:
HOJO, Detroit property we p/u in trade for Walt Terrell( Houston property rec’d w/Darling in Mazzilli deal. also Sid Fernandez was Dodger prospect.Darling, covered above under HOJO as a Houston dev property. Rergarding trades, of course u deal prospects/suspects that’s why u have them to use for needed pieces u can’t fill inhouse. If we were to acquire an additional SP what else do we have to deal? certainly not deep enough MLB depth as to not create a hole filling another hole. Solution is to trade an unproven prospect AKA SUSPECT!
While on it in the same vein u may want to list Pagan as a NYM homegrown as he completed his milb training & was dealt out of AAA by PHillips in a deal with Cubs, who then promoted him to THE SHOW.
BTW u do realize your moniker includes a nonMet developec player in Piazza, whom we wouldn’t have acquired had we followed your plan not to deal young developing players. Case u weren’t aware Piazza was developed by the Dodgers, (LMAO)

      • MAYBE YOU FORGOT THAT THESE PLAYERS WERE YOUNG AND PRODUCED FOR THE METS (WHICH IS BY THE WAY THE WHOLE POINT), INSTEAD OF FOR OTHER TEAMS? MAYBE YOU FORGOT ABOUT REYES, WRIGHT,KAZMIR??? WHERE DO YOU THINK THE METS WOULD HAVE ENDED UP HAVE THEY TRADED AWAY REYES AND WRIGHT ?? NOT EVEN A SNIFF AT THE PLAYOFFS, TO SAY NOTHING OF CONTENDING. AND BY THE WAY, ALL YOUR “INACCURACIES” LED US TO 1 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, (HOJO, ET AL), AND I WORLD SERIES APPEARANCE (PIAZZA) LMAO!!!

        • …AND BY THE WAY, I AM NOT SUGGESTING WE DO NOT TRADE OUR MINOR LEAGUERS, BUT IT IS NICE TO SEE THAT THE METS ARE REALIZING THAT TRADING AND SPENDING IS NOT ALWAYS THE WAY .THEY HAVE FAILED MISERABLY IN RECENT YEARS ( THE KAZMIR TRADE,MATSUI,BENSON,) REMEMBER WHEN JOSE REYES WAS RELEGATED TO SECOND BASE TO MAKE ROOM FOR MATSUI? CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY ACTUALLY DID THAT? JUST GIVE THE KIDS A CHANCE FOR A CHANGE IS ALL I’M SAYING…

          • I certainly remember the Matsui/Reyes farce orchestrated by the Wilpon Bros, Elder one in Tokuo recommemded the Matsui signing to bro. Jeff swearing Matsui was twice the SS that Reyes was! All that occured prior to (Phillips’ Era)hiring. Do u also recall the reason for signing Matsui was because the offer we made to our first choice 2B solution, though higher than one ultimatly accepted was rejected by Luis Castillo who opted to retn to FL for less $$$. most likely due to that earlier rejection & dislike for NY that Luis was offerred his current deal to stay & schill the greatness of NYM to his friend & former Teammate holding a NO TRADE CLAUSE, Santana. Amazing how things tie together isn’t it?

            • To be fair here, EVERYBODY thought the Matsui signing was a good one. And Matsui was like a 6 or 7 time Gold Glove winner in Japan, so there was no obvious reason to think that he couldn’t play a respectable MLB shortstop. Reyes is ridiculously athletic; he SHOULD have been able to move to 2B without much of a problem (other than ego).

              • Mike, what is rampant in the Nipponese League that’s not available in the American Natuional League?
What physical quality is a MUST for a quality SS that’s a potential detraction for a quality 2B?

                ANSWERS:
                1) ARTIFICIAL TURF
                2) STRONG THROWING ARM

The simple fact that an integral facet of Matsui’s game @ SS in Japan was 1 hopping his throws due to poor arm strength certainly wouldn’t escape most professional scouts; but the primary scout on Matsui was Fred’s elder son, current managing partner of Srtrling’s Japanese holdings located in Tokyo.

  • Fernando needs at least another 300-400 at bats in AAA to work on his pitch recognition and hitting lefties which he will not get in NY cause Jerry will not allow him, if he makes squad while Beltran is out, to hit against lefties and he will languish on bench. He needs to be in AAA regardless of spring training numbers to refine his hitting and fielding skills. He looked good but not great against lefties in Carribbean series that I watched but better than last year. Let him get his at bats and not stick him in the middle of team trying to rebound from last year.

    • Absolutely. I still believe in him, and he definitely needs a few hundred more AAA at-bats for consolidation purposes. From what I’ve seen, I think he’s going to be a legit middle of the order bat.

      • Mike, help me out here, by middle of the order, I understand that to mean either 3,4 or 5. I define those positions as best filled by:
#3 high batting avg, modicum of power, typically the lineup’s best hitter
#4 modest batting avg. high power totals,
#5 same as #4; but beter contact hitter.

Sorry; but I don’t forsee F-Mart in any of those defined roles for our team. In NYM franchise history those positions were never better filled as defined above than in ’86 by Mex,Straw,Kid! based upon current 40-man roster, I would like to see Jerry attempt this lineup in ST:
        REYES
        BELTRAN/PAGAN
        MURPHY
        BAY
        WRIGHT
        FRANCOUER
        SANTOS/BLANCO
        CASTILLO
        PITCHER
With my thoughts being that Beltran/Pagan are best suited to take complete advantage of the fastball diet Reyes on base produces & of those players remaining Murphy most closely fulfills the high avg.+ modest power definition of a #3.
I’m certain there are those with volumes of sabremetrical statistics disproving this lineup’s effectivness; however, I’d love to see it tested this spring as Castillo’s ability to advance runners may be better applied late in games advancing a slow catcher into position for the due up PHer. While it’s wasted whenever Reyes is leading off. Castillo’s inability to TURN ON A FASTBALL has at times been costly as a #2 hitter more often than not. Playing on a field with spacious allies it would be “:nice” to have a #2 hitter that occasionally reaches them with authority insteasd of bloopers.

  • [...] throughout the league because of this fact.  After a hot winter league showing in which he was named the MVP of the Caribbean Series, the spotlight once again shines on Fernando to see what he can do this spring.  Even though he [...]
