Deja Vu: Mets Interested In Another Catcher

The New York Mets currently have four catchers on their 40-man roster with Chris Coste, Omir Santos, Henry Blanco, and Josh Thole, but apparently the Mets are still interested in yet another catcher.

According to MetsBlog the Mets appear to be interested in former Toronto Blue Jays backstop Rod Barajas, who hit 19 home runs and had 71 RBIs last year.

Barajas is, of course, the backup plan to Yorvit Torrealba, who ended up signing with the San Diego Padres after the Mets supposedly couldn’t come up with the right amount of cash to convince Torrealba to come to the Big Apple for two years.

Hall of Fame writer Murray Chass, is saying that Mets GM Omar Minaya and his employees apparently couldn’t deal with more than one free agent at a time this offseason, telling agents that they were interested in players but needed to deal with other players first. No agents were willing to wait for the Mets to finish up things with the people in front of them. One agent said his client had the Mets at the top of his list but didn’t want to wait and see if it worked out.

Another day, another catcher for the New York Mets. I don’t see the logic with yet another move to obtain another catcher that we obviously do not need.

Although I do like Barajas’ hitting ability in a park such as Citi Field, I still don’t feel as though he should be a priority. We need pitching, pitching, and more pitching!

Even if we do get Barajas’ you wouldn’t be able to throw him into a trade later in the season, because if he’s still available at this point in the off-season, than nobody cares too much about his services anyway.

  • Bring Piazza back….

  • Rod is a better catcher then Santos and would help the young pitchers this year. He and Henry would compliment each other.

  • I’ve got to believe the Mets are done. We’re not going to see this guy on the team.

    • On a second thought, if Minaya had a brain, he could bring in Barajas for esentially free. Let them quibble to strike a low ball price deal, like all Mets deals this year (except for the $ throw aways to buddies like Cora and Tatis). If Minaya can sign Barajas for $700K or so, then we can go with 3 catchers on the roster. Barajas as the starter, Santos as the backup, and Blanco for disaster insurance. Then by giving Blanco minimal time, his incentive payments are out the window and we keep him for base pay only. Voila, the Mets then get Barajas for no additional out of pocket cash flow. Of course, 3 catchers tie up an additional roster spot. But then we get a starting catcher for free or next to free.

      • Mask, that roster spot is GOLD! Likely the dif between 6 or 7 arms in the pen. Does Barajas add that much more value? I think not! He doesn’t have the young pitcher handling resume that Molina has.

        • Three catchers is normally a luxury that cannot be afforded because of the value of that roster sport, as you point out. They have had 3 catchers in the past. However, I can’t help but wonder at having lost Molina, whether Omar is lusting over the thought of a 3rd catcher as a starter. Are Jerry and Warthen squawking loudly in Omar’s ear over having lost Molina? If Omar is lusting for that starting catcher, and he just might be, then the wherewithal is available at the stroke of a pen. Blanco relegated to the bench provides that opportunity by bailing on his incentive pay. Just another way to assure that the BP arms fall off in the heat of summer as the starters barely get their 5 innings under the belt.

          • Mask, unfortunatly we’re witnessing the slow strangulation of this team by Jeff for his own purposes, his autonomy with disposal of Omar. Looks like Madden was right speculating Omar would only be allowed 20-25M to spend in total, after 17M to Bay, what culd u get for the pocket lint left? All things considered Jeff may still be disappointed & I pray he will be! LGM!!!

      • Nah, I was wrong. Blanco’s incentives are money in the bank. He gets bonus $ for being on the roster and if they cut him so that he’s not on the roster he gets the bonus $ anyway. So what kind of incentive pay is that? He gets paid one way or the other. It’s a joke. Guess Omar locked us oina corner with Blanco and threw thkey away. So taking on Baraja is more spending out the door. So I go back to what I said first, he will not be on this team.

    • Mask, you’re probably spot-on. Jeff isn’t going to allow omar to slip away from his firing squad by having a successful season. Jeff knows, Daddy hastes to dine on contracts & Fedd’ll accept any positive as a reason to avoid that supper. Jeff, obviously doesn’t have the power/ability/control to fire his reputation’s bodyguard.

  • Where’s Chris Cannizaro?

  • I disagree with you on Barajas. He would be a big upgrade over Santos. But it wont matter because the same site (metsblog() that reported this rumor now debunks it.

  • I also think Barajas is a huge upgrade. He will help the staff, and has some pop in his bat. I still think there might be a trade during spring training?

  • lets go santos

  • So Omar and his staff can’t multitask?

    Not surprising, just another excuse.

The only surprising aspect of this winter is the decisions they made for the team’s composition.

  • STOP WORRYING ABOUT SECOND RATE GARBAGE PITCHING.Getting Barajas will immediately help the pitchers we have. Spending on pitchers just because they’re available is a losing proposition. The only pitcher signed this winter who was any good is Sheets. Lackey is another Derrick Lowe how’d that work out. When you get a chance look at our pitchers numbers last year when Brian Schneider was catching, you’ll be shocked at how bad they were. Maybe he’ll do the same with the Phillies pitching staff

    • R u sure this isn’t Vinnie Brbarino? Sheets? never won more thaN 153g IN ANY SEASON, pelf,Perez & Maine have all done at least that many already
Vinnie, u may want to familiarize yourself with his record before annointing him to the HOF
