nosh, thanks for the comment. You’re right, I did go off on those writers regarding the signings you mentioned. They had it coming when reporting in such absolutes that Bay would rather play in Beirut, Angels were on verge of signing Chapman, and the Cards were moving on from Holliday.

As for the latest Mets news, I was in fact mostly reporting because I had yet to decipher all the sides to the story and form an opinion. My post today should tell you how I feel. Thanks again.

With the mets, it is always about ticket sales. Last year they held off on Reyes and Beltran because they wanted to fill seats, IMHO. They tried the same trick on Carlos again and he was not having any of it. I normally do not like guys going off the reservation, but these execs and owners in the mets FO are so inept and dishonest, I just have to take Beltran’s side. Experience has taught me that when lies are being told around the mets, you can be sure the Wontpons have their hands in. They sell real estate. They don’t even think it is lying.

Giving the benefit of the doubt, and say he did follow doctors orders, and this doctor is suppose to be the best, I still don’t understand why they waited until January 13th when he had pain since November on something that has been reaccurring for some time now. This same great doctor that had him rest last year.

I’m thinking there are three sides to this story, Beltran’s, the Mets and the TRUTH.

This makes sense. If, as many suspect, Omar is just a figurehead, and Beltran advised him of his decision, then the mets are to blame. I am sure they did not tell their players that omar was just a front man. Their inherent dishonesty created the predicament. Of course, if Omar is just a toady, his obligation was to tell the team what Beltran had told him. He is getting paid, after all. Once again the met interpretation of Management 101 comes back to bite them.

Beltran’s contract calls for $37 Million evenly split between 2010 and 2011. Assuming Beltran needed some medical work done on his knees, and knowing that Scott Boras is a long range planner, maybe Boras and Beltran concluded that right now is the most opportune tactical time to get the work done.

The Mets may not like what their star centerfielder has just done, but they will be unlikely to institute legal action with a total of two contract years hanging in the balance.

If Beltran were able to play through the discomfort this season and decided to get the procedure done next year, he would lose leverage in his attempt to get the Mets to offer an renegotiated, extended contract — just as Carlos Delgado is now finding out. Beltran and Boras apparently are confident that Beltran will be completely recovered by the end of the contract’s last year — 2011. Next year would give less recovery time.

I think this issue likely played a role in Beltran’s — and especially Boras’ — mind. Such a decision may be worth millions more money.

I would be more comfortable with Beltran’s statement if it didn’t pass through the stained hands of Scott Boras. Also, was Beltran’s signature attached to the statement?

Boras has excellent technical and persuasive skills, but occasionally he distorts, hypes, minimizes and controls information.

If Beltran made these statements openly and without duress, why didn’t he invite the press and video journalists into a brief session?

I’m skeptical.

Not bashing your post, you did exactly what reporters should do which is report the facts. But in reporting the Holliday signing, the Bay signing, and Chapman signing, you seemed to go out of your way to bad mouth several baseball writers. I’m just wondering why you didn’t take the same liberty to bad mouth the Mets in a clear case of incompetence by the team.

Again I don’t mean this to pick a fight or come across negative, but it’s clear in reading several of your other posts you don’t shy away from giving your opinion. This story however, you did.

Just curious and I don’t mean for this to start an argument. But, how come you are so quick to bash baseball writers in the media (particularly Heyman and Rosenthal) when they get trade or signing rumors wrong. But yet the Mets totally mishandled this Beltran thing, and it’s quite obvious they either didn’t know Beltran was having surgery or they did know and are lying about it, and you haven’t written anything bad mouthing them for this mess.

Isn’t this sort of incompetence much worse than say being wrong about where Aroldis Chapman would sign?

If what Beltran expresses is true then they need to back up one of those septic tank cleaning trucks to the Citi Field offices and just vacuum all the effluvia out of there. My favorite team is a laughing stock and I’m sick and tired of it. Enough already, enough.

Carlos’ explanation is completely plausible. The Met’s position appears to be offbase. Let’s wish Carlos health and a speedy return to resuming baseball. It was best to fix the problem and improve his condition. The Mets appear as though they preferred that he be available from the start of the season even if it meant diminished performance because of daily pain. Mgmt’s position appears to be indefensible and unwise. Once again the Front Office appears to be in disarray and have real problems and they prove to the fans that a change is needed to turn over the ownership to smarter people and to engage a brand new Front Office.

I would think Carlos Beltran is in the right here. Carlos has followed all the procedures which the Mets Have wanted him to do. He has seen the Dr’s done all the treatments and rehab which he was asked. Gotten back to play the 19 games. Then followed the rehab. When he had problems went back to the DR’s. If the Dr said that surgery is your best option to correct this problem. This is the third step how long would this go on more rehab or what. As an employer they also need to think about the future health of your employee. He is a key player for the team if surgery is needed lets do it if he will be health and it will extend his career. I want to wish Carlos best health and a speedy recover we want to see you at 100% in Center Field so you can help us we games and score lots of runs for the Mets. Good Luck this Season.

I am thinking and hoping that we’ll all fixate on this for a week or so, and then say our prayers that this surgery enables Beltran to be a major offensive and defensive force on the Mets for 3/4 of 2010. In the end, we all better hope that in September we can look back and say the timeliness of the surgery couldn’t be avoided and that it helped Beltran and the Mets in the end.
