shamik, don't know if u saw it; but i believe the surgical procedure removed both the scar tissue & the injued tendon. the hamstring tendon is typically the one drs remove to transplant into elbows when performing tj surgery. since i've never heard of a pitcher sustaining problems because it was removerd, i believe it's one of those superfluous items we humans left behind while developing sorta like an appendix. i'm no dr.; but i have read it to be superfluous
my point is it's impossible to reinjure a tendon no longer there.

Wow there sure a lot of naysayers here today. All I have heard in some of the most recent posts is about Jose, his coming injuries, his decrease in performance and how he will dissapoint fans. I don't hear on any of these blogs a peep about Wright, Johan, Maine, Pelfrey, etc. It is like the whole reason for this years failure and next years failure is just Jose's fault and not anyone else. Sure are a lot of Jose haters here today.

Mike? Do u pay attention? Do you know that the Hospital for Special Surgery is one of the premere Orthopedic hospitals in the world? that we do not have an actual Team doctor" persee; but have contracted with HSS for the services supplied by their entire staff(a chng implemented by omar) The hamstring tendon, i believe was totally removed, since this tendon is considered to be superfuous as it is the one chosen for removal & placement into pitcher's elbows to complete TJ procedures. with hundreds of thousands of pitchers, both amateur & pro undergoing that sugery trough the years, I've yet to hear of one developing an issue caused by it's removal despite all of the work/pressure pitchers put on those legs. last yr was the first season since his breakin first fullseason that Reyes missed significant time due to injury, yet i believe his spiked hand before the '06ASG was the only other d/l trip. look it up:
'05 - 161 games
'06 - 153 games
'07 - 160 games
'08 - 159 games
i believe that constitutes a player who's been pretty steady health wise there are too many idiots like adam shein & joe beningo talking out of their asses out there. arguably our ss in among the top 5 out of 30 starters in mlb. i think we all saw enough of how uninspiring the lineup is without him. who's available at any time who's slam dunk better?
personally, i've trouble believing our health prognosticating is caused by the medical team alone; but would tend to blame the communication or lack thereof between drs & trainers.

I am really tired of guys talking about per cents. I am at work right now so I have no real access, but can anyone tell me how many infield hits and bunt singles Reyes gets in a year? To my recollection, it is not a lot. So his speed really only helps him get steals and triples. His steals have been down. I just do not see him improving, and at 25 or 26 he should be getting better, not leveling off. I just happen to be a guy who thinks Jose has always been overrated. Talent yes. Instincts no. I question his work ethic because he has not improved in any department, except maybe he walks a bit more. I am fro trading him. Tired of hearing him talk about "Jose Reyes" too.

The question is whether the surgery is effective to enable him to perform at top athletic levels. I believe the surgery was leaving in place the torn tendon stub and not replacing the tendon. That may be fine for casul walking. Is it fine for althletic competition? The stub has caused inflammation in the past resulting in pain and diminishing of ability. Why won't that happen again?

I hope Jose' is completely restored, but I don't think there is any way to judge that at his time.

His word at this tim emeans nothing because he hasn't started to run. Until he does that thre is no way to know whether the surgery was effective. Certainly he will be able to walk fine. The question is whether he can perform at the level of an athlete whose running is his main talent.

"If" Jose Reyes comes back healthy...

"If" David Wright can re-discover his power...

"If" Johan's injury wasn't serious...

"If" Beltran's knee isn't too messed up after being misdiagnosed...

"If" Pelfrey can pitch like 2008 instead of 2009...

"If" John Maine can get out of bed without hurting himself...

"If" Dan Murphy can find a position to play without embarrassing the team...

"If" they can find another big bat to play LF or 1B...

"If" Luis Castillo can show that 2009 wasn't fluke and that he's not completely washed up...

"If" Frankie Rodriguez doesn't punch out one of his fielders...

"If" Omar can somehow sign another one or two quality starting pitchers...

"If" all of these "Ifs" come true, the Mets are still an 85-88 win team, and that will not be good enough.

The Mets did not pay Cora 2 mil for nothing. Either something is going on with Reyes that they are not telling or they just bought an awful expensive insurance policy.

I think we're all hoping that he's fine, and I will take him at his word that he's feeling ok. However, he said the exact same thing before completely tearing his hamstring. I'd rather wait and see him play before I feel comfortable with him.

if he says hes feeling good, then you have to take his word for it. its is his body and he would know it best. i think he'll be running fine by the time the season starts. he just needs to take it slowly and i do wish the best for him. with a healthy reyes, i believe you get a better luis castillo as well. luis can do all the things that this team needs for reyes. hes patient and can move him over in many different ways and that is how they will be successful and it all starts with those two guys

He may miss 100 games if he reinjures the leg by pushing himself too hard early on. At the very least, Reyes himself said that he would not be 100% at the beginning of the season. For a player whose game revolves around his legs, I don't think we can expect him to match 06-08 numbers this season coming off such a serious and badly mismanaged injury. Just remember what a stellar career Sanchez had after his taxi accident. Mets did a great job with him!

Not confident at all. We heard all this last season too regarding every single player and not a single one returned. I have no confidence in anything the Mets do anymore. I need them to show me extended success before I buy into anything they do. And as Mike said above me, the Mets need to change its entire medical staff and operations, otherwise they'll never get anywhere. These days good scouting and keeping your players healthy are far more important as FAs demands become more and more outrageous.

Miss 100+ games? are you serious? you base that on your intuition? he just had surgery to repair his leg, if his rehab goes well I see no reason why he wouldn't be the same catalyst he was before. Yes the Mets have problems with diagnosing and putting players on the DL but, so far I haven't known them to mess up a players post-op rehab. I have full confidence that he will be as good as new.

Given the Mets' organization history of medical care the last few years, I am not confident in the least.

I honestly would not be surprised if Reyes misses 100+ games again next year. I certainly hope it doesn't happen, but I haven't seen anything which would make me believe that this organization has changed its procedures in diagnosing and treating injuries since last year.
