Report: Angel Pagan Has Trade Value
Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi over at FoxSports.com are reporting that numerous teams have been discussing Angel Pagan to be their potential starting center fielder.
Outside of the Kansas City Royals, it is not yet clear who exactly is pursuing the 28 year-old outfielder although the article suggests that the Brewers, Rangers and Cubs could all have some interest.
Last season in 88 games, Pagan hit .306 with six home runs and 32 RBIs with an OBP of .350.
The question is should the Mets consider trading him if there were a solid offer made?
Personally, I’m torn on this subject. On one hand, Pagan is an injury risk and has made numerous trips to the DL throughout his career. As a matter of fact, the 88 games he appeared in this year were a career high.
Additionally, he made some questionable blunders last year on the base paths as well.
Still though, this is a guy who is signed very cheaply and hit over .300 last season. To me he’s a guy that would fit the role of fourth outfielder perfectly and can come in off the bench and hit, if needed.
What do you Mets fans out there think? Am I overvaluing Pagan? Should Omar try move him?

I can definitely see the Rangers and White Sox as a good match for the Mets as a trading partner. I don’t see anything viable with the Cubs and I refuse to trade Pagan for Milton Bradley. Don’t know what the Brewers can offer unless the deal is expanded and we can try to snare Prince Fielder which sounds like a reach.
There is a part of me that is still curious about seeing Pagan play an entire season. I’d hate to trade him for spare parts only to find out we had an everyday leftfielder all along. Many of my Mets friends believe he is a better outfielder than Jeff Francoeur and more worthy of 600 at-bats than Frenchy. And you all know how I feel about Frenchy!
Why trade him? He’s cheap and in 88 games he had the second highest WAR of our hitters. Francouer is a bum. Put him on the bench and let Pagan play right. His UZR is through the roof at the corner OF spots (in a sample of games).
I think this dave is a bot and not an actual reader because human observation cannot be this bad.
I have a new stat, it’s called URS (Unbelievably Ridiculous Stat)
It’s based on the percentages of time you’ll see a URS prove that Jeff Francoeur should be benched in favor of Angel Pagan because of WARs and UZRs.
That’s the formula. So whenever you see a stupid, assinine conclusion made based on WARS or UZRs or whatever Rs you come up with, that’s the URS (Unbelievably Ridiculous Stat).
When that happens you simply just fall back on NBS (Traditional Baseball Stats).
Those are the stats we all grew up with, those are the stats that have defined baseball before GWNGFs (Geeks Who Need Girl Friends) came up with these stats that count how many steps it takes to get to home plate (STGTHP)and resting a ballplayer based on those stats.
Or we could have skipped the whole darn thing and used the EYEs stat and you tell that Francoeur is a better fielder than Pagan..oh…and also has a rocket arm which all good right fielders must possess. Also the EYEs stat tells you that Pagan, while he may be developing into a nice hitter, needs to learn the game of baseball, IMPROVE his fielding, and stay healthy.
Pagan can’t throw. He doesn’t throw well enough to play center. How can anyone suggest he play RF? You probably also want Murphy on 2B!
Oldtimer but wait a second!
Can’t you see that Pagan has good UZRs and WARs??? Therefore he must be better than Francoeur. Can’t you see that????
only if they take Castillo in the deal
yeah lets give away a .300 hitter for nothing just because we don’t like him……..and we call Omar an idiot.
Pagan’s numbers over a full season are good, but not great. However, the problem becomes whether he’ll play a full season. He may be the perfect 4th outfielder on this team when May/June injuries pop up.
A Pagan trade depends on three things:
1. Whether or not we sign a good left-fielder. If we fill that spot, then we could easily sign a cheap defensive specialist. Although, at 600,000 per/year, Pagan is very cheap.
2. Who we get back in return, and how much they make per year, as Pagan is cheap. The fact that he’s cheap means that we have some leverage in negotiations, as we don’t have to trade him, and can wait for better returns.
3. If there is confidence that he can play a full season without going on the DL.
Also, i wonder if we would get a better return at next year’s trade deadline, if Pagan does not go on the DL. He can also be a part of a trade at next year’s deadline, if we need one.
I think the Mets should sell high on Pagan. His value will never be any higher than it is right now. The injury risk is just to high for the Mets to hold on to him. If they can find a way to fill a need, (such as a proven set-up man) or package him in a larger trade with Luis Castillo for a pitcher/outfielder I say do it. The Mets have a lot of holes to fill and may have to get creative to fill them. I still think the most glaring weakness on this team is the starting pitching.
Pagan for a solid starting pitcher would be good for the Mets. A few new faces are needed for 2010.
If the Royals want to part with Greinke for Pagan and say Niese, I would take that in a heartbeat.
Yea..if the Cardinals want to trade Pujols for Daniel Murphy we should do that too.
Why would the Royals trade greinkie?
Over a full season, Pagan would have out produced everyone on the Mets except Beltran and Wright. The Mets are too stupid to realize what they have. Years from now Mets fans will be moaning like they do about Jason Bay. Even those Mets fans who say trade Pagan now. Our fanbase can be just as foolish as the people who run the team.
You will never know because he can never play a full season without getting hurt. Maybe you dont recall when he hurt his groin on a fly ball to left center last year and had to go on the DL. He has proved time and time again that he flat out cant stay on the field.
Some value! A thirty something with a bad attitude and bad contract. Pagan is worth more than that. I like him better in left than I do Murphy on first.
Keep him unless an offer comes we can`t refuse
Only trade Pagan in a deal for Halladay. Toronto could use a starting outfielder and some could contest, that Pagan is the most major league ready outfielder at a cheap price available to be traded by any of the Halladay suitors.
We Want Halladay!
Sell high Omar.Just dont trade him Guillen.I agree package him to Toronto, for Halladay.Come on Omar be the man do something.
Trade Pagan get somebody decent back. Sign Endy Chavez to replace Pagan.
They should only trade Pagan if its for a good #2 starter. Pagan, Murphy, Tejada and Parnell for Hallday would be nice.
Goodbye, Angel.
Angel Pagan played well for the team last year other than some bad base running errors. If the team had a slugging first baseman Pagan’s run production would be acceptable. As a fourth outfielder he would be valuable but unless the Mets get another big time run producer, then they should think about trading him as part of a package deal. The Mets desperately need another big bat and or a top flight starting pitcher. If the Mets could get both an RBI man and a quality starter than they should be able to bounce back and compete in their division.
The Braves have gotten stronger, the Marlins more matured and the Phillies will be players in the Free Agent market. Will we?
