Phillies Favorites For Halladay; Becoming Yankees Of The NL

According to Tom Verducci of SI.com,  the Phillies are emerging as the favorite to land Toronto ace Roy Halladay. “They’ve been very aggressive,” one baseball source said about the Phillies’ pursuit of Halladay. “They’re putting together a package, even if they need another team. They’re trying to find the players [on other teams] the Blue Jays want to get it done.” The Phillies, who already have the National League’s best offense, would arguably have the [...]

Jason Bay: In Defense Of His Defense And A Fifth Year

I was surprised to see the following comment by Keith Law on ESPN’s Rumor Central (subscription only), regarding free agent outfielder Jason Bay. “Bay is the best overall hitter on the market this winter, with more offensive potential than Matt Holliday, but less defensive value. Bay is extremely patient and has shown he can hit American League pitching.” I disagree with Law and believe that Matt Holliday is the best overall hitter, but what the hell [...]

Mets Make Offer To JASON BAY (Confirmed)

Earlier this afternoon, Mike Francesa of WFAN reported that the Mets have made offers to free agents Bengie Molina and Jason Bay. This has now been confirmed by David Lennon of Newsday, as well as Joel Sherman of the New York Post. According to Francesa, the Mets made the decision to target Jason Bay instead of Matt Holliday, because they believe Bay’s swing and hitting style will translate better at Citi Field based on the results of a study and [...]

The Waiting Is The Hardest Part

As the final day of the Winter Meetings comes to a close, the Mets fly back to New York much like the same team that arrived on Sunday. Any and all dreams of blockbuster trades and big free agent signings slowly dissipate into the same pessimistic feelings we ended the season with. There will be no press conferences to announce a major signing like last year when the Mets made so much noise. Instead we [...]

Mets Sign RHP Clint Everts; Could Be A Real Sleeper

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Mets have signed minor-league RHP Clint Everts. Everts, 25, was highly sought after and was being pursued by 15 teams at the Winter Meetings. Last season, he was 8–1 with a 1.65 ERA in 44 relief appearances while pitching at three levels in the Washington Nationals farm system including Class-AAA Syracuse. In 60 innings pitched, he allowed 49 hits and walked 26 while striking out 68 batters. Everts was originally drafted by Omar Minaya, then [...]

Mets To Make Two Offers; Bengie Molina and John Lackey?

Steve Popper of the Bergen Record is reporting that the Mets will make two contract offers before leaving the Winter Meetings today. Based on additional reporting from Adam Rubin of the Daily News, one of those offers will most likely be to free-agent catcher Bengie Molina. Earlier reports yesterday that the Mets had already made an offer turned out to be inaccurate. Also, there is some buzz around Twitter that the second offer could be for starting pitcher John Lackey. However, [...]

Update: Mets Trade Rule V Pick To Dodgers

With the seventh pick in the 2009 Rule 5 draft, the Mets selected pitcher, Carlos Monasterios, from the Philadelphia Phillies. Monasterios, 23, has certainly made his way around the tri-state area over the past couple of years. In 2006, he was sent to Phillies by the Yankees in the trade that brought Bobby Abreu to New York. Last season, Monasterios spent a majority of the season in Class A+ affiliate, the Clearwater Thrashers. In his [...]

Mets Restructure Henry Blanco’s Contract

Last week, the Mets made their first dabble into the free agent pool when they signed veteran backstop, Henry Blanco, to a one year deal worth roughly $1.45 million. However, as Newsday’s Ken Davidoff reports (Hat tip to MLB Trade Rumors for link), there were some red flags that popped up during Blanco’s physical, in regards to the condition of his shoulder, which made the team leery of guaranteeing him as much money as they [...]

Think Outside The Box – One Year Contracts Only

I think the Mets should change their whole way of thinking.  The Wilpons should give the edict to Omar Minaya that he is restricted to only signing and acquiring players on one year contracts.  There is too much uncertainty with Omar’s ability to make good decisions.   Let’s play the 2010 season under this scenario and see what happens.  Then afterward everything and everyone; players and general manager should be evaluated.  We don’t want Minaya to [...]

Winter Meetings Day 3 Recap

The Brewers have agreed to terms with Randy Wolf on a three-year, $29.75 million contract. The deal will be finalized pending a physical. The Mets had strong interest in the 33-year-old left-hander who made 34 starts and posted a 3.23 ERA and 1.10 WHIP for the Dodgers last season. According to AOL’s Ed Price via Twitter, the Mets “feel they are in contention” for free agent left fielder Jason Bay. They will have to fend off heavy interest from [...]

Mets Showing Signs Of Life: Lackey, Bay, Holliday, Molina

MLB Insider Jon Heyman of SI.com tweets that the Mets are now engaging John Lackey, Matt Holliday, and Jason Bay with renewed hopes of signing one of them. Purse strings opening for Omar? Mets are talking to Lackey, Holliday and Bay with renewed hopes to sign one of big three. I’m not buying into anything until we get something more substantial, but at least that bit of news is somewhat hopeful. Of course the big news this morning [...]
