jdon, it’s unfortunate that your eyes have been sewn so tighly shut.
There is no possible valid argument that, considering ALL THE FACTS apparent since Fred bought out Nelson can possibly hold Omar totally responsible. Even if he was, don’t you owe him credit for Pedro,Beltran,Delgado,Wagner,Santana,K-Rod, et al?
Are Alou, Castillo, Perez that overshadowing?

Mask, nice to see u’re paying attention.
As I’ve been saying for a long time here, the nym organization under FRED(NO PICTURES PLEASE) WILPON, has been designed to stymie the most expert CSI techs looking for fingerprints. Omar certainly deserves more praise than scoff for actually accomplishing a smidge of relevancy despite the internal morass of scattering cockroaches. Go all the way back to ’86 when off field exercises were more page 6 than backpage and u’ll see little mention of Fred, ever. I don’t ever recall seeing him even at the lockeroom celebrations after defeating Boston.
There is less known & more supposed about the Wilpon Ownership than anyone cares to admit. For instance, COO Sol(Uncle Sol) Katz is a Partner; but what are his specific responsibilities? While I readily admit to using suppositions in many of my rants, those suppositions are based upon the results of my excellent circumstantial memory & sleuthing I’ve personally conducted and the resulting picture is far from pretty. I feel comfortable in stating the Omar Years will go down as our Good Ole’ Days as it pertains to relevancy and players desiring to wear blue & orange & black & offwhite & white or whatever sells more shirts.lmao!
Don’t forget, it isn’t easy accomplishing anything while battling all of your supposed allies simultaneously while never letting on you’re defending positions u were judst vehemenytly arguing against. Too often, I believe Omar not only caught the presscorps by suprise with his deals; but the Wilpons as well! (Francoeur,Nady,Church,Schneider,Perez,Maine acquisitions)
Just try to imagine the difficulty of working within a framework whereby you were supposed to act as a control on your direct boss.
For Omar’s last 3 yrs, I believe Jeff has gone out of his way to destroy his reputation in order to get his father to agree to fire him. Jeff has been constrained by Fred through Omar Which, When Jeff wins out is why Omar & the organization look so dumb(Willie & Bernarzard dismissals)

Sarge, in Sheets’ case, the salesman’s NOT LETTING U START THAT “CREAMPUFF!” Anybody who buys that PIG IN A POKE! Certainly deserves to be COMMITTED! Forget the back, What about that shoulder issue? I’d need assurances he spent ’08 in a full body cast recovering from elbow,shoulder & back surgery complete with full medical details & photos to even talk to him! Yet somehow there are still misinformed masses screaming his name @ Omar/Jeff. Likely same dullards as were just crucifying Omar for Perez! Lemings being led to the sea by Beningo & his unhappy cohorts/self loathers & Met-Haters all!

Sorry but I am with you 62 on what is really happening. Bay does not want to come to NY, Sheets wants a contract handed to him, his performance unseen and we just have to take his and his agent’s word that he is 100 percent, and what about his back? This is why agent’s are agent’s and not doctors cause as a used car salesman will tell you that she runs like a beauty but I can’t give you a warranty but take my word and you’ll do great!
Ha, had to say that but not meant to offend the honest used car salesmen out there.
Sheets should only come to Mets on a 5-6 million dollar deal with incentives or he can join Bay and sign with Boston.
Good signing on Escobar Omar or Jeff, whomever.

62, If we agree, it’s that Omar is a stooge and scapegoat for JW. If he was to be emasculated and handcuffed, JW would have been better off just firing Omar’s butt since someone else could have taken over the decision making thereby reducing Jeff’s personal effort in running the Mets. Life is easy if someone reliable is in charge. Oh yeah, but then they would have to eat Omar’s salary. Better in Fred’s thinking to just leave him hanging there as a puppet slowly turning in the breeze. The organization is dysfunctional and nothing good will come of that.

DC, Sheets? Why won’t he pitch a tryouut session? His career’s been marred by shoulder,elbow & back injuries. Only one was addressed, elbow & he’s refusing to let anyone see what he’s got to offer otyherr than his pastr successes. Why? Even Pedro pitched audition sessions, more than one. Sheets is no Pedro. Good; but never great! Sheets should be folded & put in a linen closet not on our roster at any cost, not without a trial showing. He’s either delusional or hiding somewthing, either way Pass!

Mask, u’ve gotten exactly what u’ve been begging for & I’ve been warning u about; a Mets’ team run by someone other than Omar Minaya.
Though technically Omar still wears the title of GM,(a Jeff smokescreen keeping Jeff out of direct fire) even u must admit this supposed Waterloo Season for Omar is definitly “OUT OF CHARACTER”.
don’t u ever ask WHY? This, if u remember, is the NY Mets of old, where the BIG DEALS were names like Vaughn, Apier & Trachsel! When players returning from injury were considered additions. Sound familiar? It should it was the mantra of the 90s! The only relevancy the Mets had during the Free Agency signing period came under Omar’s reign! Since he wasn’t perfect in his choice of gambles inking An Alou, a Castillo & a Perez. You wanted him banished for his failures instead of tolerated for his successes. We’re back to the “24+1″ & “bad back” excuses, back to NO decent Priome Player wanting to chance failure in NY! Players prefer stability to instability, that’s probably why they prefer Atlanta to NYM. Just look though Braves were the team of the 90s with dropping attendance almost keeping pace with dropping payroll. Their Fld Mgr & GM weren’t diasmissed despite being surpassed by two div contenders struggling to finish repectably. Free Agents see this & it’s comforting! they read the entire Mets’ fld mngt team(incl coaches) & frontoffice are on probation & they’d play anywhere but.

If all we’re going to do this offseason is scrape the bottom of the barrel for bargains, then this deal is probably as good as it gets. This is probably Omar’s best deal this offseason, which is pretty sad overall. However, there is a good likelihood we could get a useable arm out of this for the pen or even as the #5 as the season works out. We’re still looking for the deal to write home about. That deal is yet to be anoounced, but I’m not holding my breath for it.

I agree. Not the worst signing in the world. But why is a big market teaqm scouring for bargains. If he pitches well as a reliever, and a lot of starters can, fine. But why is Omar telling us he has to focus on Bay then pitching and dredging around for guys like this. Couldn’t he look for better pitchers?

Let’s see what comes out of spring training in March. I hope the Mets don’t sign Pineiro because I’m afraid he will be bad when Duncan is not around. Sheets is an alternative also but he won’t get 12 million from any team. One year plus incentives like Escobar has.

DXe4s, and if he doesn’t, we’ve lost nothing, it’s not like a season has ever hinged on a setup/situational reliever/spot-starter. These trypes are supposed to be “contributor players” not “hinging decisive players” That’s why we’ve got Santana,Beltran,K-Rod,Wright,Reyes to be the difference makers Escobar, Duque, Livan, D.Oliver(from ’06) types are there TO BE GREASE FOR THE SKIDS OF THE REAL DIFFERENCE MAKERS enumerated above.

Hey, man, I’m either part of the problem or part of the solution…Here’s what I’d do…

Santana
Sheets (Pelfrey)
Pelfrey (Maine)
Niese (Ollie)
Nieve (Figueroa)

I’d stack the rotation two-deep and slot a ready-made backup when the inevitable injury bug bites. Far from perfect, but I didn’t bust a budget trying to fix the rotation. Sheets is a beast and carries the highest ceiling of all pitchers on the FADL. Bedard is a close second and would absolutely neutralize the Phillies if healthy.

During the interim, Maine & Figueroa can all occupy positions in the bullpen with K-Rod, Stokes, Igarashi, Escobar, Parnell & Feliciano. Ollie must prove his worthiness or work out his kinks in AAA.

Given our surplus, I’d really try to engineer a trade for Brandon Phillips, such as Maine, Parnell, F-Mart & Castillo + cash.

I am probably in the minority here, but can’t we sign a pitcher that hasn’t been on the DL for the past 2 seasons?

So much of this organization’s recent failures has been predicated upon the unfulfilled expectations from members of the pitching staff. Just LAST YEAR we were without Maine, Ollie, Niese, Redding, Nieve, Santana, Wagner & Putz for extended periods of time. The season before…Pedro, El Duque, Maine, etc…

Stated another way, we can project Escobar’s contributions until the cows come home. Let’s see how he responds to pitching 5 times in 2 weeks in Flushing next April.

And if we’re going to sign Escobar, why don’t we just roll the freakin’ dice on the “FADL” market and sign Pedro, Bedard and Sheets to incentive-laden contracts. Reductio ad absurdum, here’s our rotation…

i like the Escobar deal. i think it’s moderate risk at a low price, and incentive based. i’d also like to take a shot on Sheets. He’ll come with a higher Gty but maybe that can be incentive based as well.

I will agree that this is a great signing. He’s still has life in his fastball and has shown success in the past. If he can find a way to be healthy I believe that, if we are winning, the game could be overe in the eighth inning. From what I know Igarashi can pitch to both righties and lefties so he could come and and take some pressure off Feliciano. Parnell has shown that he can pitch better coming out of the pen and brian stokes did a fantastic job last year.

Good signing by omar but I believe he’s gonna pull off a big trade or signing in the next week. This definitely helps this team a lot but they still need help on offense and in the rotation.

I think it’s a good signing but the money reflects the risk/reward curve. If it didn’t, every team would have been after Escobar. Let’s hope he stays healthy and makes a good contribution.
