The following players were not offered arbitration today and are free to sign with any team. In the case of the Mets, their first round pick was protected anyway, and they lose nothing by signing a Type B free agent.
Of the players that are now coming across the sports news wire, these four players could be useful for the Mets.
Rich Harden – Cubs: I’ve been a fan of Harden ever since he broke into the big leagues. He’s coming off a rough year, but has a career ERA of 3.24 and a 1.24 WHIP.
Placido Polanco – Tigers: He just won a gold glove and in my opinion he could be a better fit than Orlando Hudson if the Mets trade Castillo.
Miguel Olivo – Royals: If the Mets are looking for a one year option until Josh Thole is ready, Olivo could be that guy.
Joe Beimel – Dodgers: The Mets still need a bridge to K-Rod, and Beimel has played that part with great success in the past.
More updates to come in what looks to be a busy Hot Stove Tuesday.

I think it would be a good move for the Mets to get Harden. He is a good pitcher and I don’t think he will cost alot. He didn’t really have a rough year 9-9 4.09 ERA. It’s not great but it’s not bad.
Why would anyone trade for Castillo and his contract when Hudson and Polanco are available on the open market for less than 6 million and could probably be signed to one year contracts? Bad contract by Omar, very bad!
OLDTIMER, I READ THAT THE LONGEST TENURED MET WAS REYES WHICH BASICLY MEANS THAT EXCL JOSE & DAVID EVERY PLAYER ON THE PROPOSED 25 IS AN OMAR ACQUISITION, CASTILLO TOOK A YR TO EARN WHAT HE GOT, NO HE ISN’T A LOT OF THINGS; BUT HE IS AN ASSET OF SORTS WHEN USED PROPERLY. “IN-THE-BOX” THINKING PROJECTS LUIS AS A #2 HITTER PREDOMINANTLY; HOWEVER, WITH A PREMIER SB THREAT LEADING OFF, HOW MUCH IS AN ‘ADVANCER’ REALLY WORTH? ONE ADVANTAGE TO HAVING A REYES LEADING OFF IS WHEN ON BASE HE DISRUPTS PITCHER’S SCHEMES FORCING MORE HEATERS AND IS CASTILLO BEST SUITED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM? NO. I’D LIKE TO SEE REYES LEADING OFF IN FRONT OF HEATER KILLER BELTRAN WITH LUIS BATTING 8th, BEING ADVANCED BY PITCHER INTO SCORING POSITION FOR REYES. I BELIEVE THIS ALTERATION CAN REAP MORE BENEFIT OUT OF THAT CASTILLO CONTRACT THAN WE’VE EXPERIENCED.
THE BEST THING FOR ALL OF US TO DO IS TO ACCEPT THAT BOTH CASTILLO & PEREZ ARE LIKELY TO BE ON OPENNING DAY ROSTER & BE THANKFUL FOR SANTANA,K-ROD,MAINE,PELFREY,BELTRAN,et al.
[...] see Polanco is a terrific fielder with great range at 2nd base. He hits doubles and has some pop in his bat. Won a two Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger and he’s…Ah but do we do with Rogers [...]
Add Randy Wolf (who would have been Type A), Orlando Hudson (A), Jason Kendall (B), Miguel Tejada (A), Xavier Nady (B), Jermaine Dye (A), Kevin Gregg (A), brandon Lyon (B), Octavio Dotel (A), and Adam LaRoche (B) to the list of players NOT offered arbitration.
We must sign 3 among Marquis, Garland, Wolf, Sheets, Wolf, Washburn, Piniero; take a flyer on Harden or Bedard. Sign Figgins; sign Holliday or trade for Crawford or Pierre; sign Nady to pair with Murphy. Sign Barajas or trade for Chris Snyder.
i think we trade for Crawford next week: Pelfrey, Martinez, Santos or Tejada for Crawford.
We shall see.
In regards to your Carl Crawford by next week prediction…..I hope you are right Bob. I am also curious where if at all you read this wonderful news?
JJ
-rotoworld.com- Red Sox going very hard for Rich Harden so they could trade Bucholtz to either FLA for Ramirez or A-Gone, if Harden signs with the Sox, i could see yanks signing Lackey and both bos and NYY telling Tor F-YOU and leaving Halliday for the mets
Well J Jardine, unfortunately, that image is in my wooly head, triggered by signing chris coste, which inspired me to think Omar’s inspired for next week’s meetings.
We all know Omar is under the gun from the fans as well as ownership. And Crawford, said to be a potential trading piece, would be an ideal fit for us in LF. Even more of a total fit than Holliday. And i’m conflicted, because i far prefer FA signings to trades, wishing to protect the decent chips we do have available in the high minors or MLB level, but one has to give to get.
Getting Crawford, somehow trading Castillo ‘somewhere’ for ‘someone’ then signing Figgins to play 2B + a few pitchers. Those would be great moves that would markedly improve our team for 2010 and beyond.
i may be dreaming. We shall see.
I love cashing in totally free casino chips online. I started redeeming free casino chips about 1 year ago and it’s a great way to play at online casino without breaking the bank. I’ve redeemed about 1000 since starting! I love free money!
