Someone would have taken him if the price was half what we paid or 3 yrs for $18 mil. But Omar goosed it up to 3 yrs for $36 mil outbidding himself falling for a bill of goods from the evil agent insuring Ollie a good life without having to work. In 2 yrs Ollie can retire to his hacienda with his lovely.

Of ocurse, we are assuming somebody would have actually signed Ollie and he was not forced to go back to the Mexican League. Or possibly Japan. Remember, no one came calling. Omar could have sat on his hands and had him for peanuts.

Apparently they love DeJesus and would trade him 'only if overwhelmed'. But i hear ya, maybe we do Pagan, Mejia, Martinez, Stokes, and Santos for DeJesus, Bannister, and Meche (they shed payroll as an incentive). Callaspo's 'D' apparently 'suspect'.

Minus Pelfrey, add a pitching prospect and some cash for the Royals and we've got a deal!

I never thought of that, but you're absolutely right. Imagine if the team were $36 million richer and had a first round pick and another high supplemental pick to show for itself. Maybe they would have come away with some one more impressive than Steven Matz. Oh well...maybe next time.

That's an interesting trade idea. I've always been pretty high on DeJesus and Meche would fit pretty nicely in the back of the rotation.

I totally agree and I think the signing of Wayne Krivsky is an indication of the team looking to change up the dynamic on the team.

As you know Krivsky has made big moves in the past in order to shake up a ball club and I wouldn't be surprised to see him have input on one this year too.

Thanks for checking out the interview. I think Costa was pretty much spot on with his assessment of the team.

Pete M: did you take a sneak peak at KC's needs?! Great job! KC needs setup guys, a lefty starter, catching depth, a speedy CF (Pagan was actually mentioned!).
DeJesus, 30, (great, 'D') and Callaspo, 27, (2B 'D' slightly suspect) both had solid years at the plate. Meche had a bad year due to injuries and is supposed to be ready in the Spring.
But KC has no need for Castillo. They traded for Chris Getz, whom surprising to me (much worse #s than Callaspo) seem to be looking on Getz as their 2B (great fielder? dunno).
Definitely we could transpose some guys: Pelfrey, Stokes, Pagan, Santos for DeJesus, Callaspo, Meche and see if that works.

We all know how bad that Oliver Perez contract was, but that's not even the worst part. Oliver Perez was a Type A free agent, and the Mets could have gotten a 1st round pick and sandwich pick had they simply let him go.

Phil,
Thanks for the interview with Brian Costa. He is the only beat writer who I have read who makes any sense. I disagree with one point however. We need to rebuild and orchestrate a major overhaul. This team does not have winners; they have a losing mentality. Other than Wright, Reyes, Santana & K_Rod, it is time to totally clean house. And if we can obtain young studs in trade for any of the above, that would be OK, too.

Brian's best point however, is that the organization needs to focus its efforts on fortifying a minor league base with an infusion of talent and top (high level)coaching/training.

Phil, Thank you for this very good, well balanced interview. I liked the response in which he said the Mets need to invest more in their farm system and the draft in particular. I hope Mets mgmgt is listening regarding that one. All the other answers are very solid as well and confirm pretty much where we think we are at.
