You’re right. That is very scary as well. It is amazing that with all the technological advancements that have been made, cartilage is still essentially irreplaceable. There is a new technique that has been developed, whereby cartilage material can be extracted from an individual and grown then replaced within the joint. The benefit is that it is genetically the individual’s own material and will not risk rejection. However, the recovery is very difficult and entails not placing any weight on the joint for an extensive period of a year or so. For an athlete, that is debilitating and a very long comeback, it at all. But, as you say, it remains to be seen what Beltran’s condition is for next season. We are far removed from knowing the status of this team with 4 core members having significant health issues: Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, and Santana. Hopefully Wright comes back 100%.

I am also worried about Beltran. He was stiff and uncertain when he came back. If it is true and he has no cartilage in the knees, I see him as severely limited in the future. I like Beltran a lot, but if he is going to be hobbling around by mid-season, maybe the mets better think about this a little bit. What I saw from him physically at the end of the season was not encouraging. Maybe he was playing more hurt than he said. I hope so. But if not, we should try not to get left holding the bag.

There has been no statement that the damaged tendon is being removed. It has rolled up and is useless and there is a stub left at the attachment to bone. The surgery description says cleaning up scar tissue. Take it for face value as stated; there is no removal of the damaged tendon. The question for me is whether the remnants that remain will continue to cause inflammation with running? The Jose’ story will not be complete until he takes up rehab and transitions to actual baseball. This will continue as a news item for the next 6 months until he actually performs.

They did not forget. The surgery description is as given, cleaning up scar tissue period. There never was an intention of repairing the tendon. It is claimed it has no function and is not needed. The question is will he truly to be able to perform as is expected of Jose’ without it?

I will believe it when I see him running around the bases and he better not have a limp cause this will fall on Jerry and Omar for not doing this sooner. I am so dissapointed that this simple procedure/healing time/whatever was not done and instead allow Reyes to get more hurt.

I think the torn tendon was being removed. It is not needed anyway. It basically is just there to tear and cause pain. I think this is the second time he has injured it. Duh.

So they went in and cleaned up the scar tissue. Did they forget to actually repair the torn tendon?

“Hopefully, Jose will be back as the same player he was before the injuries.” I hope so but I’ll believe it when I see it. Hammys are very tricky and as we all know so well, Jose has a Hammy History.(Double meaning)
