Mets Aren’t The Only Team That Peaked In 2006

Three years ago today, Carlos Beltran got a good look at an Adam Wainwright curveball and the Cardinals went on to the 2006 World Series.  (I have spared my fellow Mets fans from having to see that picture by showing you a photo of Beltran hitting a home run against the Cardinals instead.)  After that devastating loss to St. Louis, the Mets thought they could use it as a springboard to bigger and better things.  [...]

Mets Want First Baseman To Pair With Murphy

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, the Mets will probably look for a power bat in left field and look for a right handed bat at first base to platoon with Daniel Murphy. While the Mets know they need to get an upgrade in power in left field or first base, I get the sense it will be in the outfield. There’s little sense blocking prospect Ike Davis by signing a first baseman [...]

It Was Vintage Pedro Out There Last Night

Many were surprised by the spectacular performance put on by one-time Met Pedro Martinez. I wasn’t. The 37-year old righthander looked more like the 27-year old version as he completely shut down a voracious Dodgers offense and held them to just two hits during seven shutout innings of pure vintage Pedro. Martinez didn’t walk any batters as he unveiled his masterpiece, but unfortunately for him (and fortunately for us) he handed over a certain win to a shaky Phillies bullpen [...]

What Went Wrong With The Mets Bullpen

The Mets seemed set up for a great 2009 season.  Not the least of their strengths would be their bullpen, which was overhauled during the off season. We signed K-Rod, and then made the big trade for JJ Putz, and even got Sean Green back in that deal which looked so good at the time. Returning would be Perpetual Pedro, and Bobby Parnell made the team out of spring training and looked sharp. Everything looked good into June. K-Rod was [...]

I Still Can’t Move On

Are you guys sick of the Yankees yet? I can’t seem to avoid them or Brett Favre no matter where I turn these days. They’re just always everywhere… What angers me most, and makes me turn ten different shades of green, is listening to the media paint them as a team that has had to overcome so much to get back to the pinnacle of baseball. Gimme a freaking break… It was more a case [...]

Sizing Up the Mets Minor League Prospects

Last week, there was a great article on Project Prospect, about the Mets minor league system.  Ryan Fay had a Q & A with Toby Hyde, of the Mets Minor League Blog.  I’m going to relate the highlights of this article and add in some statistics and comments.  The article is a great read. Kirk Nieuwenhuis – CF – age 22 – “fairly high on Kirk”. Good defender in CF with improving bat and power.  [...]

Jeff Wilpon: The Real Mets General Manager?

This is a story making the rounds on the web the last 2 days and it has really started to pick up steam.  According to ESPN.com’s Peter Gammons, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon is the real general manager for the New York Mets and Omar Minaya is just a puppet, designed to take the heat when seasons like 2009 occur. Gammon was on Michael Kay’s radio show yesterday and Kay asked Gammon’s about Omar hiring hitting [...]

Paul McCartney To Release Citi Field Concert CD/DVD

Paul McCartney has unveiled the tracklisting for his new live album and DVD, “Good Evening New York City”. Of course the concert was a reunion of sorts with the Mets and their ballpark. The first time Paul McCartney appeared at Shea Stadium he and the rest of his band introduced the rest of the country to the Beatles in their first ever US outdoor concert. The new album is expected to be released on November 23, and was [...]

Reyes Undergoes Successful Surgery

Finally some good news on the Jose Reyes front. The Mets shortstop underwent surgery Thursday to clean up scar tissue around a torn hamstring tendon behind his right knee. The surgery was performed by Dr. Daniel Cooper at North Central Surgical Center in Dallas. The team said in a statement that Reyes will begin rehab in the near future and will resume baseball activities in January. Reyes played just 36 games this year because of [...]

Mets Interested In Yusei Kikuchi: Hype or Hope?

Several sources are confirming that the Mets, along with several other teams, will be meeting with Japanese high school pitcher Yusei Kikuchi. The 18-year-old lefthander, who throws a fastball that has been clocked as high as 96 mph, is the latest sensation hailing from Japan, and some say he might be one of the best. Kikuchi will hold talks with the Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers and the San Francisco Giants on Monday, [...]
