It seems that the whole concept "great pitching wins championships" still eludes Omar Minaya and company...If the Mets only got Holliday and Lackey I would say they would have an above average team next year with 80-84 wins, good enough to be in the thick of things for the most part, but not good enough to make the playoffs.....I'm getting the feeling that 2010 will be a gap year and "growing" year for this team

Matt Holliday and no pitching, come on man, do they really think that santana, perez, pelfrey, maine and neise is really going to get the job done???? Even if say they went Holliday in LF, Molina at C and say Delgado at 1b or nick johnson or murphy, they really think they could get to the playoffs that way........

I actually have Game 6 recorded, including commercials, on a VHS tape. I'm so thankful those DVDs came out because I was wearing out the tape watching it every year on October 25.

I'm also thankful for the DVDs because Vin Scully sounds so much better digitally remastered. It made it far easier to include those legendary calls as part of the blog.

Great post Ed! This is also my favorite Mets memory too. I remember celebrating with my dad and he was driving around the neighborhood like a lunatic shouting and screaming with his head out the window and blowing his horn along with all the other crazed Mets fans who were honking horns in their cars and some were even shooting fireworks in the streets. It felt like the 4th of July... everyone was out in the streets and partying and we didnt even win the series yet.

I still get goosbumps everytime I watch either of those box sets which I proudly own. The Essentials is one great game after another and the bonus disk is awesome.

the game and win was so big that it's actually part of BOTH Mets DVD box sets (1986 World Series of course and Essential games of Shea).

I have a partial transcript of the WHN radio broadcast in my writeup of the game on RememberingShea. I'm watching the TV broadcast on DVD now.

I could've been there and my mother didn't let me because it was too late (even though it was a Saturday...but I was still a few days short of my 14th birthday). Our tenant was a bus driver and he was supposed to drive members of the media to the game. They gave him tickets to the game and he offered me his extra ticket. I could've been there for free (no idea where my seat would've been), but I'm not bitter. Instead I just write about the game instead of giving firsthand accounts like you just did. Okay, maybe I am bitter...

Thanks for the interesting side note on the wild pitch. I'm still trying to figure out if Ray Knight really passed out in the dugout after he scored the winning run. TV replays show him slumped over in the dugout as if he had passed out with teammates surrounding him.

Regarding side notes, I have an interesting one that I will blog about when I write on the Game 7 victory on the 27th regarding a certain glove thrown up by a certain pitcher...

Regarding the wild pitch that scored Mitchell, what you couldn't see if you weren't there ( i won a job lottery from Speedgraphics, whose owners were season ticket holders)so I was along third base, Kevin Mitchell added to the drama by freezing at third base for what seemed like a few seconds before sprinting towards home plate; I recall everyone around me screaming "Go,Go" and looking back and forth between home and third hoping he had time to make it....what a game! I still have the stub.
