Sad news Mets fans…
The New York Mets are reporting that minor league pitcher Rafael Castro has died of an apparent heart attack. He was just 18 years old.
Castro died Friday at the Mets’ academy in Carabobo, Venezuela. The Mets announced his death Saturday.
Castro had spent two years with the Mets’ team in the Venezuelan Summer League. The right-handed pitcher was from Colombia.
“On behalf of the entire Mets organization, our thoughts and prayers are with the Castro family,” said Jeff Wilpon, Mets Chief Operating Officer.
On behalf of everyone at Mets Merized Online we echo those same sentiments.

Terrible news, especially for a player that was so young. My prayers go out to his family.
wow heart attack at 18 !?! r.i.p. Rafeal
A heart attack at 18 says that this is a person who most likely should never have been involved in competitive sports because of a serious underlying condition. You would think that there would have been telltale signs that were physical problems.
Condolences to his family and the Mets organization.
wow thats sad, 18 year old heart attack
CAPSLOCK=DISABILITY ACCOMODATION
THIS KID NEVER REC’D A TRULY PROPER PHYSICAL OR THERE WAS ILLEGALITY INVOLVED, EITHER WAY IT IS VERY,VERY DISTURBING. PERHAPS, AS USUALLY HAPPENS IN THESE CASES, THE METS GET A WAKEUP CALL THAT PREVENTS A RECURANCE.IF IT WAS A CONGENITAL ISSUE AS THE CAUSE, THEN THEY NEED TO IMPROVE THEIR PHYSICAL SCREENING EXAMS; IF ILLEGAL PRODUCT INTAKE, PERFORMACE ENHANCING OR RECREATIONAL THAN THEIR DRUG TESTING ASSUREDLY REQUIRES IMPROVEMENT. THIS WAS CERTAINLY A PREVENTABLE TRAGEDY! A SHAME ON THE HOUSE OF WILPON!
I’M GUESSING NOT ALL OF THE FARM ISSUES ARE ATTRIBUTABLE TO BERNAZARD.
ANYBODY KNOW THE MICHAEL MOORE TAKE ON THE VENEZUELAN HEALTHCARE PROGRAM?
Very, very sad. My condolences to his family.
A nuclear stress test accompanied, where warranted, by a cardiac PET scan would eliminate almost all of these tragedies. The Positron Emission Tomograpy (PET) technology is a relatively new medical application that has become vital in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease.
I’m not sure professional baseball would readily assume the expenses involved with these technologies. But with the cost of tickets these days, maybe it’s time baseball stepped up to its responsibility.
This is very sad news. Prayers go out to his family, friends and teammates. RIP Rafael Castro.
R.I.P. Rafael Castro. I hope everyone who reads this realizes that heart attacks can happen to anyone at any age. It’s not just older people with poor eating habits. On that note, please take care of yourselves and your hearts.
RIP Castro.
