ACE, HOLLIDAY'S DEFENSE, TO ME, WAS SUSPECT IN COORS,SIMILAR DIMENSIONS TO CITI'S EXPANSE,COMMITTING AN AVG OVER 5 ACTUAL ERRORS PER SEASON IN LF IS SUSPECT IN MY BOOK. HALLADAY IS NOT THE ANSWER AS HE;D CUT THE HEART OUT OF OUR PIPELINE AS WELL AS ANY PAYROLL FLEXIBILITY. GETTING HIM TO WAIVE THAT NO-TRADE ala JAHAN COULD PROVE JUST AS COSTLY. BETTER THEY SPEND A TAD LESS ON LACKEY & USE SOME OF THAT MEAGER PIPELINE TO FILL POSITIONAL HOLES. POSITIONALLY THIS FREE AGENT MKT IS SPARSE ROTATIONALLY IS MUCH DEEPER FOR NON-ACE TYPES.(POTENTIAL #2s)

I hope you all know that Holliday will not hit more than 12 homers if he has to play half his games at Citi Field. All he is is a 25 homer guy the last two years. What makes him so qualified to be a big time power bat? Bay on the other hand has average 36 homers in the last two years and nearly hit 40 this year. Plus Bay will come cheaper in dollars and cheaper in years of commitment. Neither of them are good fielders, but that's not what the main priority is. And we do have a centerfield who ranges great to his right in Beltran, and an excellent defensive replacement in Pagan.

I think it really depends on the price tag and the role. If the Mets were to ink Atkins for less than the $1.7 million they gave Fernando Tatis, he would be something the Mets should consider. I think they could probably get him for under a million which would make him a solid righthanded bat off the bench.

I completely agree. When I first started reading the begining of your post, I was gearing up to debate the idea of adding either of these two hitters. I was glad to see that you correctly concluded that neither was capable of helping this current Mets team. I was once very high on both these batters, especially Hawpe who I once held out high hopes for. Nice job Phil.
