I am not a non believer in Thole by any means, and I understand he has yet to play in a Major League team. However, I think the Mets should definitely have a fall back option heading into next year. Wouldn't it be better to bring in a veteran to mentor Thole, simliar to what the Orioles did with Greg Zaun and Matt Wieters?

This is where it gets ridiculous,

Can we see the kid play a game first?!

Can I see him get ONE At Bat before deciding what to do with him for the entire 2010 season?

::shakes head::

Great post Phil. I could tell you put a lot of research into it, but I disagree with your premise. I believe the Mets will be fine with a tandem of Thole and Santos behind the plate next season. The Mets have so many concerns that are much bigger to worry about than going with those two behind the plate. I'm more concerned with the lack of a true power hitter in the lineup, and the fact that we need two solid pitchers in the rotation.

The odds are the Mets will go with Santos/Thole as the catching combo for 2010. As bad as the team has been this year, on a relative basis to the rest of the team, the Schneider/Santos combo has been productive even though on an absolute basis the stats are not that great. The Mets cannot be expected to have an exceptionally competitive season in 2010. In that light, any improvement of Santos/Thole over Schneider /Santos is in the right direction. In a 2010 season which can be expected to be lackluster, modest performance at the catcher position is all that is reasonable to expect. That can actually be a success in an environment of reduced expectations, which is what the Mets are facing just as the economy and the country are expecting in general. Reduced expectations - get used to it. The sooner you get used to it, the better you will be in the long run.

Phil, I said the same thing on a post a week or so ago about the Mets going out and getting a veteran catcher in the offseason, so that he could even show Thole some pointers during Spring Training. Hernandez would be good, or even Pudge. Then, if Thole continues to hit in the minors next season, bring him up as a 3rd catcher, and let him learn even more from him.

With that being said, I think a lot of Met fans need to realize that a catcher batting .265 is actually very good. We got spoiled from having Piazza on our team. There are only a handful of catchers playing now (most named Molina) that can put up good offensive numbers (still no where near Piazza though). So when we have a catcher who hits .265 with 6 homers and 40 RBI's, thats not bad, as long as the backup catcher can put up similar numbers.
