Very enouraging to see Maine back and apparently able to pitch. Hopefully we see similar performance in a longer stint next time.

Plenty of candidates for GOATS in this game. Certainly Stoner and Broadway qualify with poor performances, but did anyone expect them to pitch well this year? With a one run margin on the loss, I prfer to look to the offensive shortcomings for this game. Wilson Valdez left runners in scoring position twice and is my pick for GOAT.

The GOAT for the game is Valdez.

GOATS for the 2nd Half are: Parnell, Pelfrey, Cora, Perez, Pelfrey, Santana, Niese, Green, Pelfrey, Pagan, KRod, LHernandez, KRod, Parnell, Pagan, LHernandez, KRod, LHernandez, Parnell, Tatis, Misch, Perez, Parnell, Murphy, Pelfrey, Stokes, Parnell, Pelfrey, Stokes, Pagan, Redding, Misch, Parnell, Tatis, Valdez.

GOAT Repeaters: Parnell(6), Pelfrey(5), Pagan(3), LHernandez(3), KRod(3), Perez(2), Stokes(2), Misch(2), Tatis(2).

Let's see more of John Maine and hope he stays capable of pitching well. That could take some pressure off of next year's situation for the Mets.

that would have been beyond awesome if we had pulled another comback win out of the back, beating the Phillies the way they beat us so many times. But usual it wasn't enough. Since when has Castillo been the strike out king?

I just got back from the game. Maine looked good for his second rehab start (and his first at the major league level). But there was no depth because it was just his 2nd rehab start. Seeing the team in person for the first time since late June, a lot of these guys, especially those that have suffered the season, don't seem to be trying at times. Not running out grounders for sure. Even Jerry Manuel seems to have given up managing. Bad decisions pinch hitting (or not pinch hitting) in the 8th and 9th. Thole is great, but give him some time, and the pitchers will have a book on him.

On the Hernandez homer, the wind was blowing to right all day (based on the flags). Maybe that helped. Citi Field, that's just a deep out - they all are.

I'll write my first impressions of the Philly ballpark tonight.

Maine's velocity troubled me, but he looked strong and reminded me of pre 95 MPH Maine. The 15 game winner. But alas, the pitch counts took him out. Great...Stoner looked bad. Not ready to pitch in the MLB yet. But of course, we knew that. I was expecting better of Lance Broadway.
However, Josh Thole is doing well.

Ed --> "The mute button. Best. Invention. Ever." Hilarious.

They took him out too soon because of this ridiculous pitch-count nonsense that is ruining the game. He was getting stronger as the game went on. I don't expect a complete game but he could have gone another couple of innings at least. It doesn't matter that he threw 58 pitches in 3 innings because he could have thrown 35 in the next 3. We'll never know now.
We're in the age of the pitch counts where pitchers get hurt more often as opposed to pre-mid 90s when pitch counts weren't important and pitchers were stronger. Figure it out. Joba Chamberlain could be the prime example of a career being derailed by excessive babying. We'll see.
Getting back to Maine, he looked good - 3 innings, 2 hits, 2 Ks, 1 BB. I think he'll be fine. Good thing he came back this year to pitch. With the positive return of Maine & Beltran it gives us a clearer idea of our team next year and hopefully "shuts down" the "shut down" talkers
