The Mets will not go to arbitration with him and risk paying him $6million in 2010 coming off two injury plagued seasons. That would be almost as foolish as the Oliver Perez deal. Maine will be non tendered and go to a team that isn't as stressfull as the Mets clubhouse is. He's gone. He had no specific malady but just a "tired shoulder". Once it's "no longer tired", he should pitch. Hopefully he can demonstrate ability to pitch during the balance of the season and restore some value. In that way he can be ready for ST or even be included in a trade. If he's shutdown, none of those benefits accrue. This is a case where playing makes sense. They are all individual cases. Maine should definitely pitch. I thought it was wise in Maine's case because rest was all that was prescribed for him to begin with so why risk a setback? But considering the results, I'm glad he's pitching and pitching well.
