The only reason Maine is pitching is so he can work out a lucrative free agent deal in the off season. The Mets will not go to arbitration with him and risk paying him $6million in 2010 coming off two injury plagued seasons. That would be almost as foolish as the Oliver Perez deal. Maine will be non tendered and go to a team that isn't as stressfull as the Mets clubhouse is. He's gone.

Maine should definitely pitch. He had no specific malady but just a "tired shoulder". Once it's "no longer tired", he should pitch. Hopefully he can demonstrate ability to pitch during the balance of the season and restore some value. In that way he can be ready for ST or even be included in a trade. If he's shutdown, none of those benefits accrue. This is a case where playing makes sense. They are all individual cases.

I could see Omar thinking that if John Maine has a solid September and he non-tendered him, that he would get the two round draft picks he blew when he traded Wagner for two bags of balls.

When next June rolls around, Omar will be lookiing like a man who lost his car keys, "I know I put those draft picks somewhere, you know what I'm sayin'. You seen them?"

Totally unrelated, but I have an idea about how the Mets can rid themselves of Luis Castillo and sign Orlando Hudson as a FA. Hire Tonya Harding and give her one of David Wrights' bats to take Castillo's knee out!!!! Don't give her one of Castillo's bats because they've never hit anything hard in their life!!! LOL!!!! :) :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an advocate of shutting guys down either especially in the cases of Wright and Beltran. I thought it was wise in Maine's case because rest was all that was prescribed for him to begin with so why risk a setback? But considering the results, I'm glad he's pitching and pitching well.

Hojo,
Shutting down would be the worst thing to do. I don't understand why so many people buy into this 'shutting down' business. Players want to play and not only that but it's in the best interests of Maine AND the team for him to pitch a few games this season...if he's healthy and is given the ok by team doctors. Why wait a whole winter?

Extra rest when your healthy means absolutely NOTHING.

Go out there and pitch. Get yourself into shape, and hopefully go into the offseason with a better idea of where you stand.

The more of this stupid rest these guys get these days, the more injured they get LOL!

I've heard talk of 'shutting down' Wright, 'shutting down' Beltran, 'shutting down' Maine. All horrible, bad ideas that would only be counterproductive to all parties involved.

Why don't we "shut down" this "shut down" talk.
