oops. Like everyone else I forgot Cleon Jones. He hit around 310. Had big hits when we needed them Was a fine defensive OF. Must have driven in around 80 runs. {didn’t look it up}

Another key ingredient in beating those birds was the relief pitching of Nolan Ryan. No Feliciano but not bad. Of course M. Donald Donkey traded him for Jim Fregosi who promptly hit about 225 in ’70.

Amen, great post. I was in NY, just returned after living over seas for 3 years, had a hard time keeping up with Mets, but the moon landing, and the Mets overtakng the celebrating before they won Cubs was great. It was awesome staying up late at night listening to the radio with Lindsey Nelson, Murph and Kiner when I could and catching the once in awhile game on black and white TV. It was a great year for Mets and America and I was glad to see it and enjoy it, not to leave out Frazier, Reed and the Knicks and the Super Bowl champ Jets. Yes it was a great year in my life.

Yes, you’re correct. When we think back to that series, we always think of Swoboda and Agee cause of the catches. And Clendenon cause of the HR in game 5. And Seaver because…well, he’s Tom Seaver!

But Koosman was really the stud in that series. He shut down Baltimore twice. I’m actually also doing a ‘Heroes of 69′ feature and Koosman will probably be the next one I feature

Yes everything you wrote typifies the time as we were ready to enter the decade of the 70′s. But among the Mets fans at the time, the attitude had shifted from love of the comical clowns of ’62 to actual belief that this team, Tom Teriffic’s team of ’69, would do it. The ’69 Mets proved so much during their season that Mets fans truly believed that we would be victorious over the Orioles. And they were 4 games to 1. It wasn’t close and the Swoboda catch and the Seaver performance in Game 4 were the key to set up for the Game 5 Chammpionship. Jerry Koosman tends to be the forgotten man in all this, but he had 2 of the 4 victories. It was a tremendous season and a joy to Metdom for the Ages!

Wow. This is the type of work I can read over and over again. America has had some tough times in her history. The late sixties were surely one of those epochs. When New York and the country needed someone to help get them out of their doldrums, the Mets were there. With apologies to fans of the Dallas Cowboys (and I know a few from MMO…), in 1969 the Mets became America’s Team. They gave us hope, they gave up something positive, they made us believe in miracles. Thank you, Rob, for reminding us that miracles can happen in places where you least expect them.

An amazing read Rob. Thank you. I had no idea 1969 was such an incredible year for our country. I learned so much about the 1969 Mets and prior to this weekend I had no clue about that miraculous team. I truly feel honored and now I really understand why they were dubbed the Miracle Mets and why its so important to remember who they were and what they did.
