The Evil Empire Just Can’t Show Pity

This isn’t something I usually cover, but I just felt the need to put it out there. Since I can’t put this any better, i’ll just quote you from MLBtraderumors.

Because it wouldn’t be a normal day without some bad news for the Mets, Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe reports on her Twitter account that Chris Carter, the more significant of the two players rumored to be headed to the Mets in exchange for Billy Wagner, has been claimed by the New York Yankees.

Seriously, it seems as one day really cannot go by without the Mets dealing with some sort of bad news. Benjamin went on to clarify that the Red Sox pulled Carter off waivers, meaning that if he is the PTBNL, he’s not going to become a Met until the offseason. To clarify, all this claim really does is force the Red Sox to wait till the offseason to send us Chris Carter. This only hurts the Mets because they won’t get a chance to see what Carter can do until possibly the AFL, or Spring Training 2010.

Notably, the Yankees have the best record in the AL, meaning that every team had to pass on Chris Carter before the Yankees claim would be of any significance. Personally, this seems like a move out of anger against the Mets because they sent Wagner to the Red Sox. Classless.

I am a college freshman in New York City. I have been on the MMO Staff since 2007 and plan to be here for many years to come. I started watching baseball around 2001, and I am a pitching freak - I believe the art of pitching is the most important part of the game. I also subscribe to most old school mentalities about baseball. I'm always up for talking about the Mets.

  • Are you serious???? What did they have to gain by doing this??? I HATE THEIR EFFIN GUTS!

  • I was very surprised when I saw this news, but I don’t see Carter really factoring into the Mets long term plans. Still, one can’t help but feel that the Yankees only made the claim to give the Mets yet another blow.

  • I have no problem waiting until the off-season for Carter. While it might be nice to see him in action now, spring training is good enough.

  • I cant get this out of my head yet. I have a question, why didnt the Mets simply claim him? Did Omar screw up again?

    • Devin –> Waiver claims work in weird ways. Because he was a Red Sox player, all teams in the AL have priority, but the Yankees have least priority because they have the best record. Even if the Mets claimed him, The Yankees claim was of more significance because they are an AL Team.

  • It’s been suggested that this is more of a dig at the Red Sox, because now they have to keep Carter on their 40-man roster for the rest of the season, possibly limiting their flexibility. I doubt the Yankees have much interest in twitting the Mets at this point.

  • Not surprising at all, but I cant understand why the Mets or the Red Sox didn’t simply include Carter in the trade in the first place and leave the other player as the PTBNL. Especially if Carter was already on the Red Sox 40 man roster.

    • This is why you should become GM, Joe. Lol.

  • Good move Omar, outfoxed again. You a make a trade for a guy who hasn’t cleared waivers. OK, I guess Billy’s dickering brought this thing down to the wire. But shouldn’t they have made the deal in advance contingent on Billy’s agreement and got the waivers cleared first? And if the Red Sox’s part of the deal got blocked, shouldn’t Billy come back to the Mets since we lost half of our side of the deal? So now we only get the meaningless unknown guy for Billy and have to wait for ST to get the better half. Really sucks! What the hell is Billy doing in Boston since we got shinola in exchange? If the shoe was on the other foot and it was the Mets in contention, would Omar have thought to tie up the Phils roster by claiming a player they were trying to clear? Nah, he’d be too busy doing interviews on SNY.

    • Somehow this will wind up being Adam Rubin’s fault. All joking aside, it’s a low blow but it’s good move by Cashman making the Red Sox keep this guy on their 40 man roster and you’re right Omar would have never have thought to do this to the Phillies, shows you why the Yankees are winning the AL East and we’re trying to stay ahead of the Nationals.

    • I agree with you mask. Seems like some simple strategy on Omar’s part would have stopped this before it started. What am I saying? Omar…having stategy? I doubt he’s ever won a game of checkers in his life! One good thing though, for the few fans left that defend Omar and claim the state of this organization is the sole fault of the Wilpon’s for being cheap; this should be case in point to get Omar out. IMO, this whole Wagner deal was handled wrong all the way around and what do we have to show for a player of Wagner’s caliber? Thanks again Omar for another stunning leadership move to better this organization.

  • Exactly what are our expectations of the Yankees?

What can you expect from a pig but a grunt?

  • A bit of convoluted thinking no! Why should we be upset that the Yankees claimed Carter because they wanted to get a bit of revenge for dealing Billy Wags to the Red Sox. Did you expect them to be happy? As Met fans we should stop trying to compare ourselves or our teams to theirs. We are Mets fans and a whole different type of baseball fans.

Let us be concerned with what is going to be done this off season to get us back on track for the future. Part of the problem has been how management reacts to fan and media opinions on what is needed to be serious contenders. Truth be told, we did not have enough SOLID and RELIABLE starting pitching in the past few years. Our core players were great and even our bench was good with Endy Chavez, Ramon Castro and many others. Our starters were often injured or had not matured enought to be dependable for 25 plus starts per season. Being that pitching is the most important ingredient for winning pennants it is no wonder we are in this mess. The kind of pitchers needed don’t grow on treees and unless you greatly overpay in the free agent market you can’t get a quality starter unless you trade a very good core player to get one.

  • The yankees are doing whats best for them. We should operate the same way but we dont. We never should have allowed the Phillies to get Cliff Lee or the Braves to get McLouth and others. We sit on the sidelines and let our rivals get as strong as they want. That’s something that the yankees have never done.

    • There is too much complacency with Mets mgmt. All they are interested in is the proceeds that come out of the cash box on a daily basis.

  • this move by the yankees has nothing to do with the mets, it ensures that the redsox have to lock up a place on the 40 man roster for this guy, who lets be honest, isn’t going to ever make the mets major league roster

i just wonder why minaya didn’t keep wagner and let him sign elsewhere in the offseason … picking up the draft picks

    • Are you really wondering or have you missed that wilpon clearly gave him orders to trim salary?

      • To save the 3.5 million – well fair enough then, that is a good point you bring up that I wasnt thinking of

        • That’s what it is all about and nothing else. The only thing in focus for Mets mgmt is the condition of the cash box and how much moola is coming in every day. $3.5 mil less out the door by ditching Wagner? Go for it! The order of the day – MONEY! MONEY! MONEY!
