Mets Injury Update: Beltran Inching Closer To Return?

According to Steve Popper of the Bergen Record, Carlos Beltran took batting practice today on the field for about twenty minutes.

Popper said that Beltran appeared to be “fine”. He reports that Beltran hit a ball hard enough to reach the Pepsi Porch, which is definitely encouraging. He even goes as far as saying that he was surprised that Beltran was not in the lineup tonight.

Bart Hubbuch echoed a similar report, however he noticed that Beltran still was walking with a limp. Hubbuch also reveals that Gary Sheffield will not play tonight, rather he will be activated tomorrow.

Hopefully, all goes as planned, as Jose Reyes was supposed to be activated ‘tomorrow’ two months ago. Still, it is encouraging to hear that two of the bigger bats in the lineup are getting close to returning.

  • That’s great news on Beltran, but the limp makes me wonder if he’s pushing it. I wonder if they could play him in LF to lessen the load and let Pagan stay in CF for the first week or so. We do need his bat, but I don’t want to see him get hurt again.

    • That’s a great idea!

  • If they are expecting Beltran back shortly and that Sheff is due back tomorrow, maybe that explains why Minaya chose not to make a move at the deadline…still would’ve been nice to add a bat, but if 2 are due back within 7 days like these reports would suggest, I can actually understand not making a move. If/When Sheff and Beltran are activated, the lineup gets much better:
    LF-Pagan
    2B-Castillo
    CF-Beltran
    3B-Wright
    1B-Murphy
    RF-Francoeur
    C-Santos/Schneider
    SS-Cora
Bench includes Sheff and Tatis (and those not sent down to make room for Sheff and Beltran)

  • There are conflicting reports in the newspapers today. A couple suggest Beltran looked good enough to activate today, and two others that say he should be shut down for the season.

  • Beltran is pushing himself to come back. I admire his spirit, but I question if he should be playing is he still walks with a limp. Maybe he could be on the bench and pinch hit late in games. I would not want to see him out in Center field though.
