This Season is nothing like 1987,The Mets suck and they will always suck! I threw in the towel when Delgado went down and that Moron Omar didn't make a move. This mess is all on Omar and Freddy Coupon, cause if they would have signed somebody other than K-Rod, the Injuries wouldn't matter as much. It's time to rebuild.

Nice academic discussion.

And really not happening.

This is a painfully mediocre offense, and the pitching it somewhat better than medicore.

The 87 Mets were a team that was in the hunt in 85 (with 98 wins), won it all in 86 and made the playoffs in 88, and but for Orel H. having a year for the ages in 88, would have gotten to the World Series.

Let's see, what did the Mets do in 07 and 08?

Really, I will refrain from mean spirited sarcastic comments, but you really are way off base on this one.

dude, really nice work. Brought back some painful memories...I was at the game when Gooden returned from Smithers to a standing O..I'm getting goosebumps thinking about it. I also remember the sinker that didn't sink like it was yesterday. I think this team can rebound too, but I'm not entirely optimistic.

Very nice on the comparisons with the 1991 team. That season is also reminiscent of this team, with injuries to key players and Bud Harrelson managing his first full season after replacing Davey Johnson in the first half of the 1990 season.

For readers unaware of that season, the 1991 Mets were very much in it for the first two-thirds of the season. They even pulled off a ten-game winning streak wrapped around the All-Star Break. Then the wheels came off, as the Mets fell under .500 and never recovered. The low point of the season was an 11-game losing streak in August. During the streak, the offense failed miserably, never scoring more than four runs in any of those games. That is similar to the long stretches of offensive ineptitude the 2009 team has had.

I'm hoping the second half of the 2009 Mets season isn't a repeat of the second half of the 1991 season, or else the fans who haven't gone restless yet will surely revolt!

This season is not like 1987. Yes there are/were injuries in both, but it's not really the same. I equate this year to 1991 (best explained why by my post from last week). Ed is right that this team is under a bigger microscope than the 1987 team was (imagine Gooden's time in rehab being blogged by 25 different fans every day).

And yes, the '80s references are good. ALF is even on TV every Sunday evening on WGN.

Each team had a different type of pressure, but that's due to the era. The 1987 Mets had the typical pressure of any defending World Champion by trying to improve upon a season that ended so spectacularly. The 2009 Mets have to concern themselves with the pressures of justifying the hefty contracts doled out to the players. The current Mets also have to deal with many more forms of media than the 1987 Mets did. Everything is out there now, making it easier for the most trivial thing to be analyzed and criticized. I can only imagine the new pressures that teams in 2031 (22 years from now) will be forced to handle.

I wonder what this site would have been like had it existed in 1987. What would we have talked about/complained about? Maybe we should have a "Turn Back The Clock" day for blogging.

A forgotten crushing blow in 1987 was the walkoff HR hit by the Phillies' Luis Aguayo off of Jesse Orosco the last week of the season. That erased any faint hopes the Mets had of catching the Cardinals. I believe that loss dropped the Cards' magic number to one with three games to play. More importantly, that sealed Orosco's fate. He was traded to the Dodgers in the offseason and ended up winning another World Series ring in his first season in L.A.

I have to say I loved everything in this article (even the bad 1987 pop culture references, LOL) except one glaring item: The Mets are not reigning World Champs. I have a hard time equating this year to 1987, barring all the surface similarities like plugging holes with journeymen and rookies and keeping heads above water till the reinforcements come in, because the Mets have had two enormously disappointing years preceding this one. This year? Injuries to members of our core and big bats and pitchers? Par for the course, especially with the given years. In fact, I would say the pressure was more ON the 1987 team than the 2009 team. Like Joe D, though, I am really kind of anxious to see how they hold up against NL East rivals upcoming like this Braves series. It will be VERY telling to see how they handle it.
