Actually it was Mickey Owen, not Owens. The Brooklyn Dodgers were the perennial butt of the League and got their chance in 1941. They made it to the World Series that year and went up against, guess who, the Yankees. The Dodgers were down 2 games to 1 but were in control of game 4. Here is the rendition from Baseball Encyclopedia: "The Dodgers led 4-3 in the top of the 9th with two out. Casey threw strike 3 past Tommy Henrich, but it also got past catcher Mickey Owen, allowing Henrich to reach first. The Yankees then pounced for four runs to take a commanding 3-1 Series lead. Keller's double, scoring two runs, keyed the big inning." Needless to say the Yanks took the series in 5 games. It was not until 1955 that the Dodgers were able to go all the way.

That event memorialized the Bums of Brooklyn. In 1962, their descendants the Mets came into creation. At first lovable Bums, then World Champs on rare occasions, most recently trying to become hateful Bums.

In the prior era, 1942 saw a visionary come on the scene as the GM of the Dodgers: Branch Rickey. What do we, the Mets, have to look forward to for organizational inspiration as we enter 2010?

The Wilpons should be happy. The Mets are now at the laughinstock stage. It should bring back nostalgic memories of "the Brooklyn Bums" of the 1940's, as memorialized by the hapless bum with his hobo bag and toes sticking out of his wornout shoes. The only consistency being incompetence. Bring back Mickey Owens!
