Are We Going To The Playoffs?
Now that we are pretty much at the halfway point of the season, it is time to look and see what is in store for the next half of the season. After 87 games the Mets are 42-45 and 6.5 back in the division and the wild card.
Presumably the Mets want to get 88-90 wins to make the playoffs. That means that the Mets will have to go 48-27 in the next few months. That is a tough task for most teams and especially the Mets.
Can they pull it off? As Mr. Hopps said in his article, the next 27 games are crucial, 18 of the next 27 games are being played against teams that are below .500. The Mets have to get hot now and remain hot for the rest of the season or else they won’t make the playoffs.
The Mets will also not make the playoffs if Reyes, Beltran, and Delgado do not return by mid-August. The absence of these players leaves a big hole in the lineup. Without 3 of the “Big 4″ (other one being Wright) the Mets are lacking power, speed, fielding, and leadership. The troops are currently not doing a very poor job “holding the fort.” WE NEED YOU GUYS BACK. Unless Minaya pulls in some great players with a trade the Mets are doomed if Reyes, Beltran, and Delgado miss most of August.
Great pitching and defense wins championships. Well right now the Mets are horrible in both of those departments. Pelfrey needs to be the dominant pitcher he was in the second half of last season. And what the hell has happened to Livan Hernandez. He is giving up way to many runs early in the game and is unable to pitch out of the 4th inning. Manuel’s new 3 strikes and your out rule may help a little, but Manuel and the rest of the coaching staff cannot figure out a way to get these guys to field. Maybe my Little League coach from when I was 10 can help the team out. Every game for the past two months i find myself saying “You gotta be kidding me” at least three times a game. Hopefully during the much needed break the Mets learned how to field like a major league team.
I believe that all of these things have to go right in order for the Mets to reach the playoffs. Can they accomplish this, I don’t think so. But ya gotta believe.
Lets Go Mets!!!

No hitting, no defense! I think they’re done. Especially if they have to play anorher 25-30 games without Reyes,Beltran, and Delgado. I remember when they were coming back after the All star break and all we had to do was hold on until then!
If pitching and defense wins championships then forget it
Wait till next year
Not this time. This team can’t get there. The injured players will start to return when the season already is shot. Mgmt is committed to wait and see and do nothing. There is only a slight chance that Omar makes a deal of some significance and we would have to be very fortunate for that player (dare we even think players) to make a big enough contribution to keep the team close. About 1 chance in 10 if that.
Its only July and no one thinks this team can make the playoffs. People, anything can happen. we dont look great right now but i think we still have a great chance to get in. if we can improve on our defense, we will be better and our starters need to come around. This team has the motivation to win, they are just lacking the firepower and maybe a little confidence to get it together. we dont have a great bench because our bench is on the field and once we get our guys back in early august we will be a lot better but they are going to need to do some work now. I HAVE ALL THE FAITH IN THE WORLD IN THIS TEAM. Its only July people. YA GOTTA BELIEVE!!!! LETS GO METS!!!!! LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!
CAPSLOCK=DISABILITY ACCOMODATION
I’M NOT SURE HOW TO SAY THIS WITHOUT APPEARING LIKE I’VE GONE SENILE OR SOMETHING; BUT HAS ANYONE NOTICED HOW THE NYY DEFENSE HAS IMPROVED THIS YR? WHY? TEX! JUST LIKE WHEN THE NYM HAD SUCH ASTOUNDING INFILED DEFENSE UNDER BOBBY V., OLERUD. NOW DELGADO IS NO TEX NOR IS HE WEARING A BATTING HELMUT IN THE FIELD; BUT HE HAS MASTERED THE 1B TAG PLAY & HAD DEVELOPED A BOUNCE THROW WTH WRIGHT TO KEEP DAVID’S THROWS ON TARGET. WITH THE POTPOURI OF 1B THIS YR IS IT ANY WONDER THERE ISN’T STABILITY? SORRY; BUT I’VE FELT FOR SOME TIME DELGADO’S PLAY @ 1B GETS OVERLOOKED & DOWNPLAYED. BOTH REYES & WRIGHT HAVE STRONG YET IRRATIC ARMS, AT LEAST DAVID’S USUALLY VEER TO THE RIGHT DOWN THE LINE, TOWARD THE RUNNER, ALLOWING THE ‘TAG’ PLAY MORE OFTEN THEN THE USUAL STEPOFF. DELGADO WAS ALSO PRETTY GOOD AT THE OLD GIL HODGES PLAY OF POUNDING THE MIT & STEPPING OFF EARLY AS U CATCH IT IN WEBBING STEALING AN OUT OR SO SINCE UMPS LOOK & LISTEN @ 1B.
Honestly, I am not too hopeful, but I think the bright spot for me is that it would be astounding if they played the second half as poorly as the first.
Andy is right: “…, anything can happen.”
Realistically, it requires a small miracle.
DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’!
I’m going into the second half of with a full steam of optimism unless they give me something to worry about. I worry most about Beltran’s return, because it wasn’t until he went down that the team really began to struggle offensively. While he was in the lineup we reached a high of five games over .500, as soon as he left the team went into a tailspin and so did Wright.
Going to the playoffs? You’re kidding me right? The only shot this organization has at the post season, is with the Brooklyn Cyclones.
