These Mets Are Not “Loveable Losers”

Written by Jessica DeMattia June 28, 2009 at 11:03 am

The Mets go into tonight’s nationally broadcast game having already lost the season series to the Yankees. With Livan Hernandez taking on Chien-Ming Wang, we should have a chance. Key word: should. With the recent luck of this team, we will probably embarrass ourselves while making Wang look like Cy Young. The Mets are coasting by, hoping that the Phillies will continue to lose and making every game a “don’t have to win but it wouldn’t hurt to win situation.” The only thing amazing about the Amazin’s right now is that they never fail to find a new way to lose.

I keep going back to the 1962 Mets, trying to figure out what the difference was between this current depleted Mets team and the scraps from the other teams that were used to establish this team. The 1962 Mets were the worst team in modern history, going 40-120 and they were 60.5 games behind the NL Champ San Francisco Giants. Sure, the 2009 Mets may be in second place right now, but they aren’t doing anything to catch up to the Phillies OR try to run away from the Braves (who are now only a half game out of second).

The 1962 Mets were bad. Their pitchers allowed 948 runs, which was the most in the majors that season. Our pitching staff, I feel, does their job by keeping this team in the game (except for the occasional blowout); the offense lets them down. The leading hitter on the 1962 Mets was Felix Mantilla, and he only hit .275! Craig Anderson wishes he had K-Rod’s 20 saves but his 4 saves led the team.

The 2009 Mets, I believe, are worse than the ‘62 Mets. They are uninspiring to watch. They make Little League errors and have already stranded the population of Rhode Island on the base paths. The only thing we have going for us is David Wright and his NL-Leading .348 batting average. My only hope for this team right now is that the front office realizes that we totally stink and try to make it better, even if it means giving up Fernando Martinez or Daniel Murphy.

The 1962 Mets were at least likeable. They were an escape from the Pinstripes of Evil. Sure, they lost, but at least Mets fans back then thought it couldn’t get any worse. It just did.

Gil Hodges wouldn’t tolerate losing like that. Losing is not funny.

There is no being loveable losers anymore. We grew up from that in ‘69 and there is no going back there. They were loveable because we finally had NL ball back in NY. Even then it was the baseball that was loveable, not the losing and although always loving them, the fans were ecstatic when they won. At this advanced stage, losing is hateful.

Boy has the writer here run out of material digging up the ‘62 Mets cause we are losing? Those Mets had a bunch of old, cast off players that other teams did not want. No comparison with current team. This is just an article to kick the team, that is missing most of starters and pitchers, while they are down. Wow this really inspires me to want to root for my Mets or maybe it depresses me even more. I know we are going thru a tough stretch but things can only get better with the return of our injured players so please lighten up on the ‘62 Met comparisons, we are not the Nats. LGM!

All three core hitters have no timetable for a return including Beltran. In fact it’s quite scary that with Beltran’s DL stint set to soon expire, not one word on his condition had been released, neither has he been with the team in the dugout like Reyes has. The Mets said he would miss just the minimum 15 days, but after what I’ve witnessed I think it would be foolish to believe Beltran will be activated on July 6th. Also, Bel;tran went for a second opinion on Wednesday and nothing has been reported on that either.

Reyes said yesterday he is not even close to a return and the Mets have already pushed his return date back three times.

Delgado isn’t even swinging a bat yet.

  5. Kay says:

I find it funny how proud we were of this team for taking 3 of 4 from the 1st place Cardinals, but now we lost two to the Yankee aces, and no they are not playing well, but NOW, they are uninspired?

The need help big time, but to say the actual players out there are just uninspired is not accurate and to compare them to 62 is like comparing apples and oranges…….

  6. Tie Dyed says:

As usual, I think most people are missing the point that the writer is making.

Of course, the 09 Mets are far superior then the 62 club. No doubt about it. The point that is being made here, I feel, is that in 62, even though we lost, it was expected. We had no expectations in 62. We expected to lose–and we did! 120 times. But the players were comical. They were so bad you had to laugh and you have to love ‘em.

The 09 Mets are a damn good team. But the losses are heartbreaking, NOT comical. I think it was easier to love the 62 Mets cause they were so bad. It’s hard to laugh now cause we have higher expectations and we tend to expect more then we did in 62. When Felix Mantilla missed 3rd, it was funny. When Ryan Church missed 3rd, it was sad.

  7. sarge says:

Comical maybe in 62 but you cannot have higher expectations when your team is missing 3/4 of its core and 2/3 of its starters and 1/2 of the back end of the BP. Come on expectations should be addressed according to the team that is fielded. Look at the game tonight against yanks, they had the opportunities but did not have the experienced bat to drive them in. As bad as this team right now is playing it is what we have so we kind complain, and compare to ‘86 or ‘62 team but this is the team of ‘09 until the regulars return so lets get behind them and stop trying to compare them to Yanks, Dodgers or any team. This is the team that is missing it’s core so lets get behind them and cheer them on until we are at full strength. I do not think I missed the point other than an article comparing a loser season to a season with a injured team. LGM!

  8. Jim B says:

The Mets fans back then did not go into a season expecting the team to be among the best in the league. They didnt underachieve, because they did what they were supposed to do, lose. This team today, is supposed to win.

The fans on this site can blame MInayra, HOjo, and Manuel all you want, but it comes down to the fact that injuries have killed this team. Any team that loses 3 of its 4 best hitters is going to play poorly and leave a lot of men on base. Imagine the PHillies without Ryan Howard, Rollins, and Utley? Imagine the Skankees without Arod, Jeter, and Teixera? Those teams would suck and we wouldn’t be surprised. We have to accept that this team is in a bad situation that nobody could have seen coming.
