Looking At Brad Hawpe
How many one-sided trade suggestions are we going to get with this team? Sure, I’d take Holliday, Carlos Lee, Mark DeRosa or Jermaine Dye. There aren’t a lot of people who wouldn’t. But we don’t have too much to offer back. So maybe it’s time we look at things in a different light.
I propose we trade Ryan Church, in a deal for Brad Hawpe. First off, I understand that it’s a weird thought and Hawpe may not even be available, but there have been whispers. Brad Hawpe would be a great addition to this team in my eyes and he’s an upgrade to Ryan Church. Earlier, I came across a comment on MLBtraderumors where someone said that Hawpe was Ryan Church in Coors Field, and at least Church could field. But Hawpe swings more dangerous lumber than Church does, and he’s still doing it in the Rockies lineup without the sweet swinging Matt Holliday. I understand that Hawpe’s numbers have been inflated because he plays half his games at Coors Field, but I think he deserves some credit.
The only knock I have against Hawpe is that he’s statistically not the best fielder around, and this is true, because his “Range factor”, the amount of ground he covers, isn’t very high. But in 2006, he led all MLB right fielders with 16 OF assists and fielded to a .987 percentage. To be fair, Hawpe’s percentage dropped to .956 in 2008 but he had 77 less chances compared to 2006. However, whatever Hawpe doesn’t cover for in defense, he makes up for with above-average offense.
Hawpe owns a career batting average of .287 and a career OBP of .378. Hawpe hit 20 doubles, 20 HRs, and 80 RBIs for three straight years: 2006-2008; hitting 30 doubles in 06’ and 07’. His career year was 2007, when he hit .291 with 29 HRs, 116 RBI, 33 2B, and scored 80 times.
This year, without Holliday as protection, he’s batting .337 with 9 HRs and 47 RBIs and an OBP of .410. He’s already stroked 21 doubles this year in only 196 ABS.
If those numbers aren’t convincing, there’s a few more things to note. Hawpe is batting .327 against left-handed pitching this year, so he’s proven he can hit lefties.
And for the doubters that believe that Coors Field is the only reason he’s such a good hitter: Hawpe owns a .294 career average at home, and a .281 average on the road. He’s hit 61 doubles and 48 HRs at Coors, while stroking 63 doubles and 49 HRs on the road.
So with all this behind me, I suggest that we go after the 30-year old Brad Hawpe. Would Church and two Triple-A pitchers do it? If it were a pretty decent relief pitcher or two, the Rockies would welcome that. The Rox also have a crowded outfield with prospects Carlos Gonzalez and Dexter Fowler starting to produce. And for anyone who was wondering, Hawpe owns a career .360 average against the Phillies.

Trading Ryan Church for another Ryan Church is not going to save our season. How about trading one of our other 50 outfielders for a couple of arms?
Kielty, Evans, Martinez, Murphy, Tatis, Pagan, Reed, Sheffield, Sullivan, Beltran and Church for 3 outfield spots?
not going to help the mets at all. so many holes to plug on a leaky dam.
Point taken. And i think the most gaping one just emerged.
I’m a fan of Brad Hawpe, but I’m not sure the Rockies would make this deal for Church and a few minor leaguers given Church’s recent injury history. Also, Church has never hit more than 15 HR a year while Hawpe appears to be headed towards his fourth consecutive 20 HR season. Something that might turn off the Mets is Hawpe’s career numbers in September/October. The first five months of the season, he’s very consistent (.307, .291, .294, .299 and .292 from April through August), but he’s a career .245 hitter in 121 career September/October games. The way the Mets have faded down the stretch, that’s not the type of hitter we want in there. That being said, the Mets would probably have a better chance to acquire Hawpe or a Hawpe-like hitter than a hitter like Holliday or Dye.
Agreed on everything you said; the reason I looked at Hawpe in the first place is because it seems like way too much to look for a Victor Martinez, Roy Halladay, Carlos Lee, Matt Holliday…Etc.
Maybe a good idea, we need something. But, playing at Citi Field you really can’t afford to have bad defense out there. I think we really need to look at a versatile player with some pop.
I like Victor Martinez, can play first base and catcher, which are two great needs for the Mets.
Let’s face it, Fernando Martinez is the future in left or right field, and we can’t give away the future. But, I’d be willing to give up the young pitcher Holt and maybe Santos, and Parnell for Victor Martinex.
We need left handed power, and Martinez could play those two key positions, especially if Delgado comes back and can actually swing it.
Sounds like a lot to give up, but think about the potential lineup of Reyes, Murphy, Beltran, Martinex, Wright, Delgado…Scary!
I love the idea of Martinez But. The Indians know we’re pretty desperate at this point and it’s upsetting because they probably wouldn’t take Parnell, Santos and Holt. The Mets don’t have a super-prospect anymore, or a major trading chip. Fernando Martinez does still look bright, and Jon Niese is looking a little better down in the minors but. That’s still alot to give up, if we’re including Martinez or Niese, and i think that’s what it would take. Maybe we could get Shoppach from them, but he’s not exactly the stopgap we need.
CAPSLOCK=DISABILITY ACCOMODATION
WITH SO MANY HOLES DUE TO INJURY A SINGLE DEAL FOE A BIG BOPPER NOT NAMED PUJOLS ISN’T MAKING A HUGE DIFFERENCE. I WOULDN’T LET THE LACK OF HR BE A BIG DEAL AS IT’S ALL IN THE PLAN & DESIGN. I RECENTLY PENNED THE FOLLOWING THOUGHTS:
THERE’S AN AWFUL LOT BEING MADE OF THE LACK OF HR IN OUR ROSTER; PERHAPS TOO MUCH. CERTAINLY HR ARE FLASHIER & ADD TO SCORES QUICKLY, BEFORE MGR CAN REACT WITH PITCHING CHANGE.
I BELIEVE THAT BY PLAN & DESIGN THIS TEAM WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE HR DEPENDENT FOR SCORING/WINNING.
THE PLAN: JERRY QUICKLY INSTITUTED HIS 80 PITCH DRILL WHEREBY BATTERS WERE GIVEN 6 SECONDS TO FACE 80 CONSECUTIVE CURVEBALLS & INSTRUCTED TO SWING AT EVERY ONE WITH PURPOSE OF HITTING TO OPPOSITE FIELD. ANY SUCH DRILL IS CERTAINLY NOT DESIGNED TO ACCENTUATE HRs OR POWER STROKES, IT ACCENTUATES WRIST & HAND HITTING & ONLY THE ‘”BRONX BELTWAY” SEEMS SUSCEPTIBLE TO YIELDING HR SO CHEAPLY. IN THE 47 YRS I’VE ROOTED SOLELY FOR THIS TEAM, I CAN ATTEST THEY WERE NEVER STRONG BA OR OBP AS A TEAM, NOT EVEN AT THEIR BEST IN ’86 OR ’88. LO & BEHOLD THE CURRENT SQUAD IS TIED ATOP THE NL IN TEAM BA & OBP WITH LAD @ A ROBUST .279 & .358 RESPECTIVELY. COMPARED TO THEIR BEING 4th IN TEAM BA& OBP @ .266 & .340 RESPECTIVELY. IN ’08 THEY FINISHED TIED FOR SECOND WITH PHILLIES IN RUNS SCORED (799). PRESENTLY THEY ARE IN MIDDLE OF NL OR 7th IN RUNS SCORED WITH 316. GETTING HITS HASN’T BEEN A PROBLEM THIS SEASON EVEN DEPLETED; GETTING THE TIMELY HIT HAS BEEN MORE CHALLENGING.
THE DESIGN: JUST CHECK OUT THE CITIFIELD DIMENSIONS AND WALL HEIGHTS. OMAR STATED EMPHATICALLY WHEN HIRED, HE WAS CONCENTRATING ON SPEED,PITCHING ^ DEFENSE.
WHILE IT’S STILL UNKNOWN HOW CITI WILL TRULY PLAY ON A WARM, HUMID AUGUST NIGHT WITH THE WIND BLOWING OUT TO RF. IT CERTAINLY DOESN’T APPEAR AS SUSCEPTIBLE AS THE “BELTWAY” TO THE CHEAPLY HIT FLYBALL. 415′ TO RCF POWER ALLEY IS A BIG POKE BY ANYONE. ON NIGHT’S WITH THOSE CONDITIONS THE PITCHING SHOULD CERTAINLY FAVOR THE LEFT SIDE WHENEVER POSSIBLE. ALREADEY WE’RE SEEING VETS SAINTANA,LIVAN,REDDING, K-ROD PITCHING TO THE DIMENSIONS. SCHNEIDER & SANTOS CAn lead the lesser experience there.
MANY ARGUE IT’S NOT ALL CITI THAT’S CAUSING THE POWER DRAIN SINCE THE TEAM ISN’T BOMBING IN ROAD GAMES. I ATTRIBUTE THAT TO THE SUCCESS OF “THE PLAN” AS OUTLINED ABOVE. TIMELY HITTING IN BUNCHES IS THE KEY TO THIS TEAM’S SUCCESS..
CONSIDERING THE DEPLETION OF THE ROSTER, THE GOAL TO THE BREAK HAS TO BE STAYING WITHIN SINGLE DIGIT DEFICIT OF FIRST PLACE, PREFERABLY IN SECOND PLACE <10GB. ONLY IF THAT SEEMS TOO DIFFICULT DO I THINK OMAR WILL LOOK TO ADD A POWER BAT. IN MY OPINION THE CORRECT PKG TO OFFER FOR A HUFF OR DUNN WOULD BE MURPHY, KUNZ & MUNIZ. ADDING A POWER BAT THAT PLAYS 1B & LF ADEQUATELY MAKES MURPHY EXPENDABLE BY REDUNDANCY. BOTH NATIONALS & ORIOLES ARE IN NEED OF RELIEF ARMS. OMAR HAS ONLY 12-15M BEFORE REACHING THE WILPON HARD CAP OF LUXURY TAX LINE. USING ANY OF IT UNNECESSARILY ON A SUPERFLUOUS(WHEN VETS RET’N) BAT NEGATES HIS ABILITY TO EVEN CONSIDER A HALLADAY(12M) SHOULD HE BECOME AVAILABLE. PHILLIES & BRAVES HAVE BOTH INCREASED THEIR PAYROLL IN ’09 TO THEIR INDIVIDUAL MAXIMUM, FISH & NATS UMLIKELY TO ADD. LEAVING NYM THE SOLE LIKELY TALENT IMPORTER IN THE DIV COME 7/31. BECAUSE PHL ARE NOT PREPARED TO DO WHATEVER IS NECESSARY RE. PAYROLL IS WHY THE NYM-PHL RIVALRY WILL NEVER EQUATE TO THE BOSOX-NYY.
Ryan Church is sooooo out of here! No way he is still on the Mets come August 1st, and you could put that in the bank.
I agree with the agrument against what the Mets might have to give up for Victor Martinez. I’m right there with you guys, but let’s not forget, say what you want about Omar, in these situations he seems to shine brightest.
Let’s not forget, how he was able to nab Johan Santana, for three guys that really weren’t the best prospects. Gomez has proven to be major league ready, but not a even close to being a star.
So let’s also think who we are dealing with here. The Cleveland Indians. An organization that always loses, and never pays their players, and will take anything they can get for them.
Yes, right now we are desperate. Yes the farm system is depleted, but it is only depleted until another season goes through and some kid in Single-A achieves success, and now he’s a highly ranked prospect. The Mets do have some young talent in the wings waiting to be discovered next year.
I like the Hawpe idea, but in my opinion he is just more of the same. Let’s play good defense, let’s put speed on the basepaths, and most importantly let’s get a power lefthanded bat that is versatile so if Delgado comes back, we still have a position for him. But, I agree right now if we asked for the trade, the Indians would milk us, but maybe in three weeks, we could get him cheaper.
One more thing. What is the deal with Eddie Kunz? I know he is having a nice year in Buffalo, but the Mets have to be thinking about him being promoted sometime, especially with Parnell sucking it up.
I know last year, he didn’t seem ready, and scouts were saying he needed to perfect his changeup. Anyone got the scoop on Kunz?
