Will Perez Force Mets To Get A Starter At Deadline?
I was just reading an interesting article by David Lennon of Newsday on his blog. Lennon seems all fired up about comments that were made by Jerry Manuel and Dan Warthen who both said they were encouraged by Ollie’s last start. I was kind of surprised yesterday to hear both manager Jerry Manuel and pitching coach Dan Warthen say they were “encouraged” by Oliver Perez’s 4 1/3-inning stint in an 8-6 loss to the Reds. [...]

4/9 Minor League Report! Ramirez!
Buffalo 4, Pawtucket 6 Jon Niese’s first start of the season was awful, he lasted just 2 innings, surrendering 5 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, throwing 62 pitches. Niese was in trouble throughout the day, throwing 34 pitches in the first, and 28 in the second. Kyle Snyder worked 3 innings of long relief behind Niese, then 40 year old veteran Japanese lefty Ken Takahashi came in, giving up 2 hits and a [...]

Manuel Hints That Marlon Anderson Is Out
It looks like Marlon Anderson will be the odd man out when the Mets clear a roster spot fpr the addition of Livan Hernandex. Hernandez will make his Mets debut Saturday against Ricky Nolasco. Jerry Manuel hinted that Anderson would be a roster casualty according to Adam Rubin. Without naming names, Jerry Manuel essentially revealed the looming fate of Marlon Anderson. The Mets need to clear a roster spot when Livan Hernandez is activated on [...]

The Good, The Bad, and The Ollie
It may be far easier to unravel the mysteries of Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid, than it would be to figure out Oliver Perez. Todays performance by Perez was like a perfect microcosm of his entire career. He starts out be teasing us with a tantalizing performance in the first two innings that invoked memories of Sandy Koufax, and then in the next two innings he does his best Kei Igawa impression. How can anyone [...]

Mets Notes: Putz Closing, Cora In, Tatis 2B?
Today before the game, Jerry Manuel said that Frankie Rodriguez would get the day off after a tough workload in last nights game. J.J. Putz will be called on to close the game if necessary. I’m thinking that Putz will pick up about 10 saves this season. Luis Castillo is sitting this one out, and Alex Cora makes his first start of the season at second base. Jerry Manuel is open to trying Fernando Tatis [...]

Angels Rookie Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash
A hospital official says Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart has died in a hit-and-run car crash after a game. University of California, Irvine Medical Center spokesman John Murray says Adenhart died Thursday morning after undergoing surgery. Officials said the 22-year-old Adenhart was one of three people killed in the crash early Thursday after pitching in a loss against the Oakland Athletics. The driver of a minivan ran a red light in Fullerton and hit [...]

A Tale of Two Closers
April 8, 2009. Francisco Rodriguez comes into the game against the Cincinnati Reds in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Mets have a two run lead, and need their stud closer to come in and shut the door to close out the win. In true Mets-fashion, Frankie gives us all reason to keep our eyes wide open. Rodriguez loaded the bases in part due to a shrunken strike zone, but also due to some [...]

The Old Mets Would Have Lost That Game
I’m feeling so good about the Mets right now especially after what I witnessed last night. That game against the Reds was more than just another early season win, it was convincing evidence that this might be the year the Mets go all they way. Let me explain… The old Mets never would have stood a chance last night against the Reds. Too many things went right, that never would have happened last season. I will [...]

Pelf Not as Bad as You Might Think
I can only imagine what was going through the minds of some of you when Cincy took a 4-2 lead-Pelf pitched well enough to have been beaten 3-2 at that point. But Pelf was not all that bad, not as bad as that really high, 100-plus pitch count might indicate. What I saw was a horrible first inning, followed by four mediocre to almost good four innings. Flashes of brilliance, stellar…decidedly not. Here were Pelf’s [...]

Game Recap: Mets 9 – Reds 7
The Mets won a thriller tonight in Cincinnati by a score of 9-7. Mike Pelfrey started and was in big trouble right from the start when the Reds tagged him for 4 runs including a three-run blast off the bat of Joey Votto. However, Pelfrey settled down some and weaved in and out of trouble and held the Reds scoreless for the next four innings. He threw 104 pitches and got the win, but just barely… [...]
