Mets Position Battle Watch: Backup First Baseman

An article by posted on February 26, 2009

The Mets currently have two players listed as backup first baseman behind incumbent Carlos Delgado; Nick Evans and Marlon Anderson.

Because Anderson has a guaranteed contract, it’s expected that he will be a lock to make the team, but I don’t believe that’s the case at all. Anderson is not owed that much, and if Nick Evans can prove his value to the team with a strong spring, the Mets won’t hesitate to bring him up north.

Nick Evans took a big step forward during Wednesday’s 9-3 win over the Orioles.

First baseman Nick Evans went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, but Manuel appeared most excited by an Evans ground out to second in the fifth inning that allowed Alex Cora to move over to third. That was one of those “little” plays Manuel has preached endlessly this spring. “That’s how we have to play,” Manuel said. Source: NY Post
