Hey Adam, I was just like you bro! I loved playing right field when I was a kid just because that’s where Darryl played. I wore my socks up high just like him. I tried to bat like him, but that didn’t work out too well!!! He is and always will be my favorite ballplayer of all time. He is a legend in my eyes no matter what kind of turmoil he has endured. I never have had the chance to meet this man, but it is one thing that I want more than life. I am so proud that he is doing what he is today. I’ve always heard that he is a great guy and I love the fact that he hangs around the Mets and still has love for our team! Thanks for the article Rob, it was written so well! Every Mets game I go to, especially if it’s an away game, I wear my ’87 Mets road jersey with “Strawberry” and “18″ on the back. It is one of my most prized possessions and opposing fans hate it and I always hear the same remarks. But there’s always a Met fan there to make it all better!!!!! Thanks again Rob!!!!

Strawberry will always be a Met 4 Life. Overcame his personal demons and survive a bout of cancer. I say he is the ultimate survivor while many people couldn’t overcome and took the easy way out. Hopefully the Straw Man will help those young ball players about the pitfalls of being in the Major Leagues.

Thank you for writing this Rob.
Darryl is my All-Time favorite Met AND baseball player ever. I spent many summers with my whiffle ball bat mimicking that high leg kick and swing. Unlike many other kids I actually loved playing rightfield because that was Straw’s position.
I first met him when he made his first trip to Shea with the Giants, just before the strike in 1994. Apparently, the foundation that granted my wish informed him I was coming and told him what a big fan I was. I’ll never forget seeing him for the first time ,shaking his hand and the fact he knew MY name!LOL I still have the picture with him and me right above my desk.
Anyway, it’s heartbreaking to think of what could have been for him professionally, but encouraging to see that he has made such great strides to get back where he needs to be off the field which is way more important.
For me, #18 was, is and will forever be “The Man”!
