redding did play for one of the worst teams in the majors and still won 10 games and his oba would be better with a better defense like the mets’. i think he will do better than a 5 era and he’s an upgrade over pedro/lima time.

Do you have team spirit or not? What trash, Redding is going to be fine, he beat the Phillies 3 times last year. That’s good enough to me.

Interesting stats but I would want to see a larger sample size for Castro before I judge Schneider on those numbers. Also Schneider’s numbers should be compared to other starting catchers before we declare him unworthy.

Wow! Crazy stats regarding Brian Schneider’s handling of our pitchers! I heard that the Mets were at one time considering moving him. How could something like that go unnoticed?
As for the Redding signing, the only thing that bothers me about it is that it likely means Pedro won’t be back next season. After reading the (Post?) article about him yesterday, I was fantasizing about the possibility of having this rotation:
1 Santana
2 Lowe
3 Pelfrey
4 Maine
5 a new and improved Pedro (compared to what we saw last season) who, with the loss of his father behind him, could really concentrate on baseball
I’m not convinced that Pedro is done, and if he isn’t, what a sad thing it would be to see him pitch for another team.

oh hell noe…get da f##k ouuta here…thats it for derek lowe…he wont be a met…watch…with redding getting all that money he will definately be the 5th starter…meaning we only have one lefty in the rotation…so who do we sign now? perez the lefty and cheaper or lowe the righty costier….id say perez…sometimes the mets make me so mad…watch man if they choke again….uhhhhhh……this better not be the best we can do because if it is then congratulations phillies…..shit

I know his stats from last year don’t look so good on paper, but as a 5th starter, he deserves a shot. We’ll never know how he turns out until he steps on the mound and frankly, I think he’ll do a decent job as the #5 starter. Besides, if Niese gets the spot instead, at least the Mets have a backup guy in case one of the starters get hurt.

I like this deal. Redding is a pretty good pitcher. He’s had 8 starts against the Phillies the past two years, and has gone 4-2 with an ERA of ~ 3.20. Remember, he’s been pitching for one of the worst teams in baseball. To me he looks like a competitor, and should raise his game playing for a contender.
2.25 million is totally worth it. I see him as a solid third or fourth starter, actually.
Lowe was offered 36 million for 3 years. If he doesn’t take that, he probably doesn’t want to play for New York. Do we want a guy who doesn’t want to play for New York? A second-tier guy past his prime at that?
If we had Putz and K-Rod in 2008, we would’ve beaten the Phillies by five games, and they’re the world champions. I think we should be optimistic. If we could just land another starter as good as Ollie or better (does anyone want Delgado?), 2009 is looking really good. And if we could land Manny … wow. (Though I wouldn’t bet on that – I guess Wilpon doesn’t want to ruin the great chemistry the Mets have had the past two years?)

Considering the $ amount, this is a solid acquisition. It would be a LOT better if it was coupled with a Lowe signing. Otherwise the rotation will be no better than it was in 2008.
CHONE projection for Redding:
164 IP, 4.94 ERA
I’ll take that from my 5th starter! Stay healthy Tim.

I believe Heilman held righties to .222 and we still kicked him outta here.
And Redding coughed up 27 dingers. You may be right though, he has Mets reliever written all over him.
