Around The Majors
A recent USA Today article discusses the proverbial winners and losers of the 2008-09 offseason. Obviously the signing period is not over and the rankings could change depending on where major free agents like Manny Ramirez, Adam Dunn, and Ben Sheets sign.
Of note to Met fans are the ranking that the team garnered at #2. Let Bob Nightengale explain:
The Mets decided to do something to change their gags of the last two Septembers. They signed closer Francisco Rodriguez, who had a record 62-save season last year, and traded for Seattle Mariners closer J.J. Putz. Just like that, the Mets might have the best 1-2 bullpen punch in baseball.
After being buried in anxiety over what the starting rotation that will hand leads to the bullpen would look like, it did help to think about what we have done this offseason. Nonetheless we will need to secure another starting pitcher to make this offseason better.
The other teams that received interesting marks include, among the winners: the Yankees at 1(for almost spending as much money in contracts as the entire GDP of American Samoa), the Cleveland Indians at 3(who have quietly addressed their two biggest needs, bullpen and an infield bat), and the Oakland Athletics at 4(Holliday and Giambi).
The Washington Nationals were labeled the biggest(brace yourselves) loser of the offseason for not really signing anybody after talking strong. That could change if they get Dunn, but as it stands, Daniel Cabrera is their big signing.
By the way, I almost did a double take when I read that this was the fifth year for the Nats in Washington. My, how the time has flown. No change headed their way.
In other news from around the league, the Pittsburgh Pirates are the favorites to sign ex-Met Braden Looper.

wow really 5 years? wow it seems like they’ve only been there two; i feel so old now
The Nationals train in Viera, Fl. I live nearby so each spring I go over there to see the team practice and to walk around the batting cages.
My favorite memory has to be seeing Frank Robinson conduct the drills with his class and baseball knowledge. What a treat.
I don’t get the same kick when I frequently attend the Nationals spring training games because instead of being 15-50 feet away, the players are in the main stadium, at least 100-150 feet away. The loss of immediacy and inability to see the players’ facial expressions makes me think television is not such a bad way to see my favorite team, the Mets, play their regular season games. That’s why I still feel part of the Mets even though now I’m normally over a thousand miles away.
Fellow Mets fans, look what I just found off SI.com.
“Albert Pujols is encouraging the St. Louis Cardinals to sign Manny Ramirez. The Cardinals slugger, who won his second NL MVP award in November, acknowledged the team might not have enough money to land the free-agent outfielder. Pujols passed along Ramirez’s telephone number to St. Louis manager Tony La Russa.”
Those cards better not get Manny or else the Mets are in trouble.
Yeah, the Nats have had a pretty horrid off-season, but I’d say the Blue Jays did worse overall. They were a team with alot to prove heading into 09, and basically nothing was done to improve the roster.
By the way, I think we can all agree that Braden Looper makes the Bucs the team to beat in the NL.
These are the kind of things that bother me. It makes me think the other person must be 15 and have little knowledge of sports. But Jeff why if the Cards get Manny why are the Mets in trouble? First off we’re not even in the same division 2nd the Cards have no pitching starting or bullpen. Now i know that Larussa and Duncan always turn garbage into gold but that alwats only goes so far that is why he has only won 2 championships with about 30 good teams that Larussa has had. Jeff you must be a teenager because why in the heck would the Mets be introuble if the Cards get him? I dont get it
I think the Mets are in trouble if ANYONE in the national League gets Manny. No matter how many times the Mets play a team, Manny Ramirez is a game changer, with or without his big cup o’ crazy. I’m not a teenager but last I checked, the Mets need to play the Cardinals a few times. If it comes down to a few games at the end of the season, a couple of losses against a lineup with Manny/Pujols, and it won’t matter what division the Mets play in. The Mets were 4-3 against the Cards last year, Manny MIGHT make a small difference.
I think the Dodgers are going to get Manny. No team in the NL East including Mets are going to sign him and I don’t think the Cards are going to get him either.
