Andruw Jones On the Mets? Unlikley But…

Written by Elliot Teichman December 30, 2008 at 10:41 am

When I hear the last name Jones, the three things that pop up in my mind are Chipper, Andruw, and my disdain for the Atlanta Braves. The trade
winds have been whirling and there are now rumors that Andruw could be
coming to New York as a Met to play right field. Now if one was to
place trades on a scale from not happening to packing the bags and
heading over to a new city, this trade is unlikely and closer to the
not happening side. According to Olney,
the Dodgers and the Mets have kept the “porch light on” for trade
discussions (he gives the Mets moving Castillo a 50/50 chance).

However
if it does happens, a lot of dominoes would fall: The trade would only
happen from a Mets perspective if Castillo was shipped off to LA. That
means now there is an opening for second base on the Mets. The Mets
have wanted Hudson for a while, and its not a secret, and he is still
on the market. He would make a great addition to this new, intense
lockeroom with Krod and Putz. So by trading for Jones we are effectively receiving Hudson as well, and his above average bat in the
lineup. Hudson is also a more ideal number two hitter behind Reyes
because ever since Castillo’s decline and LoDuca’s Decline, the Mets
have been hard pressed to find a consistent number two hitter in the
lineup.

The other side is that at this point the careers of
Jones and Castillo, Jones has more upside (please, take the word “upside” with a grain of salt). While it wouldn’t be the
world’s most ideal outfielder fix, it’s better than nothing. There is
then the question of pressure. Jones has been facing pressure since
going to the Dodgers to be their source of pop in the lineup. That
pressure would be gone in New York because he would be in the back of
the lineup. However, there is then the pressure of New York, which is
generally unpredictable. In the end, if this trade happened, I wouldn’t be terribly excited for Jones coming into town, but I would be excited for Castillo leaving and the possibility of Hudson coming.

but why would LA want Castillo if they already have Blake DeWitt? unless we give up another person or two and get DeWitt in return with Jones… I’d rather have Hudson though.

    metsrock-
They don’t want castillo, but they would do it just to get Andruw Jones off their team. You know why? Because Jones is finished. Like he is a worthless player at this point.
The past 2 seasons he hit .222 and .158. Seriously, look at those numbers again. He’s overwieght and looks incredibly old. I know he says he’s 31 but I feel like he’s pulling an Edgardo Alfonzo on teams. I think he’s closer to 40. Anyway, just know that if we trade for Jones, he is not even starter worthy. Maybe a 4th or 5th Outfielder. But I think he’s done.

I wouldn’t mind this trade. I know the Mets aren’t losing anything salary wise but it’s good that Jones only has one year left on his deal. Maybe he’ll have a decent season withou the pressure of eing “The Man”. Just ridding ourselves of Castillo is a plus too. Hudson isn’t great, but he’s certainly an upgrade in my opinion.

Why would the Mets want another “older declining” outfielder? We just signed Tatis to platoon in LF. Could it be that the Mets GM is actaully being honest when he has stated for the record several times that he is fine with a platoon of Tatis/Murphy and Castillo starting being given a shot to redeem himself? If the Mets saw it as a priority to obtain Hudson don’t you think we would have gotten him at this point?
If anyhting I see the Mets trading Ramon Castro and a prospect to the Red Sox for one of their young pitchers if we do anyhthing more at all before spring.

  5. Jerry says:

Boston does not need R.Castro. They Just signed Bard.
I agree with lifelong. If the Mets wanted O Dog we would have him by now. Andruw? Please. I have enough heartache now. How about we sign Hudson– Then get a decent OF. One more SP would help as well.

  6. Lifelong Metsfan says:

They signed Bard? When did that happen? Damn! I was hoping that the Red Sox would need a right handed hitting cathcer to platoon w/ Vartech. I was hoping we could get one of their young’ins in return. Oh well…

  7. Sean says:

In a fantasy world… Hudson would come in and bat second in the lineup. (I feel he is the PERFECT fit for that spot and at second base) And Andruw would hit in the 5 spot between Beltran and Delgado. He would have a year like 05 where he hit 51/128 or 06 where he hit 41/129. But, it isnt a perfect world so, stay away from Jones.
