Oh My Gado, What A Night!

g_delgado_carlos_vt.jpegI guess today is Carlos Delgado Day on Mets Merized Online. Well, why not? While some can say that this Mets resurgence lies squarely with Interim Manager Jerry Manuel, can anybody deny that he couldn’t have done it without Delgado?

Not only is Delgado doing the right things at the plate, but he even has picked up his performance defensively, continues to provide veteran leadership in the clubhouse and he always seems to be saying the right things too.

This is what he said to reporters after last night’s heroics.

“It shows we have a lot of character here and we have short term memories. Last night was a tough loss, but we were able to put that behind us and come back an play. That’s important, if you lose a game or two and start worrying about that you’re going to be in trouble.”

“Whatever happened last year, it happened and we put it behind us. We are in a different frame of mind. We’re not thinking about September of 2007, we’re thinking about going out and playing good baseball right now.”

Coming into this season, Delgado shouldered much of the blame for 2007. Since late June, Delgado has literally carried the Mets back into contention and continues to come up big in the clutch. What started out as a hot week in late June, has now become a second half that leads the league in almost every offensive category including homeruns, RBI, Slugging Percentage and Total Bases.

The question of whether the Mets should pick up his team option has been answered, and last night Delgado put an exclamation point on it. YES!

Went to my first Mets game, a Mayors Trophy game at Shea, in '73. We beat the Yankees 8-4 and I was hooked. I marched in two Banner Day parades, and before the Grand Slam single, there was the "Hendu Can Do" grand slam - I was there. I've collected Mets memorabilia all my life and started Mets Merized Online to feed my addiction.

  • I agree he has been great, but I would exhaust all potential players at first base, (including Tex), before blindly signing him. Also, I don’t know the specifics of the option, but PLEASE no long term deals!

  • Los let me the first to apologize to you ! I thought this guy was done last year. My opinion didn’t change during this past spring training. I was even skeptical about the 9 rbi game. But wow i’ve never been so wrong, ok maybe i have. We’re not even out of august yet and he was 30 home runs and he might end up with 40 ! If you told me you predicted that for Delgado I would not believed you. I would have thought that you’re full of it ! And Los is clutch with his home runs and how bout the double vs. romero a few weeks back at shea ?! Clutch hits, Clutch home runs. As far as his option goes ? why not ! He’s making the decision easy for the front office. Los… my bad !

  • It’s pretty amazing to see everybody having Delgado’s back all of the sudden. WHERE WERE YOU AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON?! I think it’s pretty crappy how it appears that Delgado laid down and sandbagged for so long just so Willie would be fired. I think Delgado shouldn’t be in New York next year.

  • At least some people are admitting that they didn’t back Delgado entering this year. To be honest, neither did I.
I was expecting 2007-like numbers for Delgado, but myself & many others were incredibly wrong. 30 HR, 90+ RBI – rediculous. He’s definitely getting 100+ RBI, and he could possibly tie his 2006 HR total at 38. He’s a huge part in this incredible Mets comeback, and I think Mets fans including myself should be a bit more successful to Delgado, regardless of his mini-slumps. I think the Mets should bring him back for at least one more year & see what he can bring.

  • respectful, not successful
