The Sheets Hits The Fan During Johan’s Shea Debut

Ben Sheets rained all over Johan Santana’s Shea Stadium debut, and masterfully out-pitched our new ace as the Milwaukee Brewers topped the Mets 5-3 on Saturday. Three home runs by Bill Hall, Rickie Weeks and Gabe Kapler helped end Santana’s day and a three-game losing streak. He lasted 6 2-3 innings and allowed five runs and six hits with two walks, striking out seven and throwing two wild pitches. On the other side, Ben Sheets [...]

Heaven Must Have Sent Us an Angel

As last season came to a sad close, many of us pushed back our tears and wondered out loud, “How could this have happened to us”.  We searched for answers, but there were none that can console us. We were broken and we needed someone or something to restore our faith. January 5th seemed just like an ordinary day. Most of us were still feeling down, and so far the off season had not been [...]

Same Old Song and Dance?

When Angel Pagan hit the game winning single in the bottom of the 12th inning yesterday, it marked the first time I was excited for the Mets, and I mean really excited for the Mets, since Johan Santana opened up the season in Miami. Really though, the Mets were playing Triple-A players and Hanley Ramirez at best. The true tests, Atlanta and Philadelpia came and went. The Mets went 2-3 in those five games. The [...]

Mets Fans Are the Most Passionate and Expressive Fans in Baseball

Add to that knowledgeable, loyal, indiscriminate, relentless, forgiving, unforgiving, manic and obsessive… fill in the rest.   We can be found all over the country and in every corner of the world. Every now and then I enjoy looking at our site statistics and marvel at the places some of our readers come from. Just this week we hailed visitors from Dubai, Iraq, Australia, South Africa, Netherlands and even the Philippines. The reasons that led us [...]

Mets Can Exhale As Big Pelf Arrives

Perhaps as crucial as adding Johan Santana was to the Mets pitching staff over the off-season, was general manager Omar Minaya’s decision to retain Mike Pelfrey. After all, at the time of the deal he was the most developed young pitcher the organization had to speak of. Philip Humber and Kevin Mulvey possessed promise, but were not deemed to be at the talent level of Pelfrey at the present time and probably not ever.   [...]

Will Mike Pelfrey Force Omar Minaya’s Hand

For every action there is a reaction. If Mike Pelfrey fails to deliver a solid performance, the reaction by Mets General Manager, Omar Minaya will be quick and far-reaching. After bringing perhaps baseball’s best pitcher in Johan Santana this off-season, things have gotten sour in a hurry in what was portrayed as a formidable starting rotation. Pedro Martinez was lost only 3 1/3 innings into the season, and Orlando Hernandez has yet to throw his first [...]

Mets Home Opener Not All That

How about a little fan poll to get the ball rolling today?  Ok, which of the following best describes the 2008 Mets Home Opener? A.  a total disappointment B.  a nightmare on Roosevelt Ave C.  an embarrassment beyond belief D.  a belated April Fool’s joke E.  all of the above If you said E, you win – unlike the Mets.  Like many others, I had to work yesterday and could not watch the game nor [...]

Your Home Opener Has Come

I sit here thinking I felt this way last September and, for some reason, I can’t do anything but watch in disgust. Am I worried? No. Absolutely not. Are there people who are about to be suicidal? Absolutely. I don’t blame them either. My mother and father said something that’ll stick with me for the whole season. It may not mean a whole lot to you guys, but it means something to me. They told me that [...]

Will Willie Randolph Make It To Memorial Day?

Unless the Mets fortunes change dramatically in the next few weeks, the answer to that question is a resounding no. Willie will NOT last past Memorial Day. Mets fans who are still disenchanted from 2007 have already begun calling for his head after barely a week into the season. One reader says, “Why shouldn’t we believe what we see with our eyes. Nothing has changed… not the attitude, not the intensity, NOTHING.” A caller to [...]

Luis Castillo: Just What The Mets Didn’t Kneed

Luis Castillo has been replaced in the 4th inning of todays game by Damion Easley. Apparently the right knee that was supposedly taken care of in the off season is just as creaky and as weak as ever. Castillo complained of soreness after running to catch a foul pop-up in the first inning and tried to play through the pain. Luis Castillo is batting .182 on the young season with an RBI. He was the recipient [...]
