Misery Loves Company
Wow, I never really understood what that meant until last night when Joe Borowski set down the Yankees and the Cleveland Indians won the ALDS in dominating fashion.
Watching the Yankees crash and burn in the ALDS for the third straight season, was like being wrapped in a warm comforter on a cold winter’s day. It felt wonderful.
Now, along with the Phillies, the Yankees join the Mets in a long off season where each team can contemplate where everything went wrong. Knowing that the Mets were not faced with having to go through that arduous task alone gives me a sense of comfort.
And while Mets fans wonder how we can improve the bullpen and add an arm to the rotation, the Yankees find themselves in even more disarray and with even more holes. Not only do they face the prospect of having a new manager, but they potentially lose the biggest bat in their lineup when A-Rod opts out of his contract 10 days after the end of the World Series. They also run the risk of losing longtime catcher Jorge Posada, and future Hall of Fame closer, Mariano Rivera.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Alex Rodriguez ends up playing third base for the Red Sox? (sorry, I have no interest in A-Rod playing for the Mets)
I hope that Mariano Rivera does become a free agent, and if that happens, seeing him in orange and blue, could be a an intriguing proposition. Of course neither Billy Wagner or Mariano Rivera would be open to setting up the other, but the thought of a 1-2 punch like that would make opposing offenses cringe.
Anyhow, I just wanted to share my joy in the downfall of our crosstown rivals with the 80% of Mets fans that share a similar dislike for the evil empire. I say 80% because believe it or not, in my life I have encountered many a Mets fan who not only tolerate the Yankees, but even go as far as rooting for them unless they go head to head with the Mets. Sounds unbelievable, but believe me they are out there. In fact, I bet some of them will poke their heads in this blog’s comments.
Just wait and see….
